Bezo's response "Stay Tuned" w/ regards to Android Tablet

Very interesting. It seems the rumors might be true after all.

Quote:
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos didn't confirm a Samsung-built tablet today, but he's not saying no -- in fact, the tell-it-like-it-is founder of the massive e-tailer suggested quite the opposite in an interview with Consumer Reports. "Stay tuned" was the answer (more...)

Actually, the comments about library ebooks are even more interesting...
...and revealing.
The Kindle library selection will be "competitive" with what's offered by other readers.
Not the same, huh?

they are working with overdrive on it so it should be basically the same titles. which will probably mean it will be HARDER to borrow a book from the library because you will have all of those extra kindle users in line as well.....

Kindle users have a right to use the libraries we pay taxes for too. If that results in longer lines for other users, then there are longer lines.

Actually, what he's quoted as saying is that the offerings for Kindle will be at least comparable with competing products. That's a bit different.

And the original press announcement from Amazon and Overdrive made it clear that this will not diminish the number of books available.

Would it? WMAs and MP3s of the same book have 2 different wait times (ie the WMA has a waiting list, the MP3 is available), maybe the books will be the same.

Libraries aren't going to be buying separate Kindle versions. The existing book (ePub, etc.) will be marked as checked out and the Kindle user will receive a compatible version from Amazon's servers.

Can you link the article explaining all that? I haven't found one that explains the process.

Thats because they have not released the details:

Quote:
When Kindles become compatible later this year, all generations of the device will work with library books and won’t require any hardware upgrades, OverDrive’s Burleigh said.

"It is going to be compatible with all the existing books that [libraries] have, but we haven’t gone into detail yet as to how the whole process will work."
This is interesting.

Quote:
"Our help desk will be very happy," said Marsha Leclair-Marzolf, associate director for the Salt Lake County Library System. "A lot of people have purchased Nooks just because they know they can borrow from the library, so that’s been a deciding factor for many on which reader to buy."
No more nookie just based on that. Time to innovate.

i dont believe i implied anything to the contrary. the libraries only have so many copies to lend. they wont get more to lend. so if you increase the number of people able to borrow the wait times will be longer.

and wasnt there something recently about the publishers limiting the number of times in a year the book can be borrowed from a library?

It's not being replaced. At least not by the alleged tablet, which will be a different product. Your K3 was a sound purchase.

I will still read on my Kindle when I buy a tablet. I like the e-ink screen too much to do otherwise.

This won't affect that at all. The Kindle 3 is still my preferred eReader for books, and a Tablet is only of interest for large format "stuff".
