What is the source of this epub? If you paid for it and used Adobe's ADE program to download it (or Sony's software), it's more than likely protected with DRM which iBooks doesn't support.
To read an epub in iBooks without buying it from the iBooks store, the DRM has to be removed first. |

Your book is undoubtedly DRM'd. If you got the book from Kobo or Amazon, use their software for reading it. If you got the book from the library, use BlueFire Reader.
Otherwise you will need to remove the DRM and put the book back on your iPad to read it in iBooks. cheers |

I ran into this error with some DRM-less mobipocket books that I inadvertently imported into iTunes. It seems that although the program recognizes the format, it doesn't properly convert them.

Stanza will not be able to read it while it has DRM, but the free Bluefire Reader will. You need to authorise the app with your adobe editions log on and password, and then transfer the book to the Bluefire app using iTunes app file sharing. (Or email it to yourself, use DropBox, or a number of other options).
