eReader with good contrast and great firmware?

I have an Elonex 621eb e-ink reader. It is almost idea for me, it has a good e-ink screen and long battery life (perhaps because it does not have any features at all, like 3G or WiFi)

However the software is annoying. It is slow to start up, and when I use Calibri what I see in the library screen are lots of folders (that contain the books) rather than the books. Also there is no search function, just a very simple sort by author or title.

Can anyone recommend an eReader with a very good screen, with lots of contrast, and excellent software.

It must be able to read ePub and PDF.

Your folder problem is with Calibre, not with your device.

By default, Calibre will put the books into folders by author name. To change this, go to your Calibre preference, and choose Sending Books to Devices under Import/Export. If you just want the title listed, under Save Template change the string value to {title}. Mine is set to {title} - {authors}, which is how I prefer my books listed.

I agree with pidgeon that Calibre will put books on your reader in just about any folder system you could imagine. The Calibre forum is very active; they can point you in the right direction if you need help for something more complex.

If you're looking for a new reader, I think the the Sony PRS x50 series are just about ideal. The firmware that comes with it is solid, intuitive, and displays libraries very well. Adding PRS+ provides an additional layer of functionality. The screen is Pearl, which is the most advanced available right now. It's touch screen, but very matte, so fingerprints simply don't show up. Maybe you'd see something if you touch the screen while eating Cheetos, but not in normal usage.

Thanks for both replies. I have now amended Calibre and no more directories. However, the firmware is still very clunky and slow.

I know early touch screens were not quite as clear as non-touch screens. Is there still any degradation in clarity/contract with touch screens?

I will have a look at the Sony readers as recomended.

No. Most modern devices use IR touch screens. These have no impact on image quality.
