Um, actually you can have several user pictures for screensaver, and Kindle does retain them on reset (they're stored in system/screen_saver directory of the mass storage partition).

The directory appears after you actually set a user picture as screensaver.

From the Kindle WordPress blog:
Jump to beginning or end of Kindle Home menu or a Kindle Book For Home Menu: 1. On your Home menu, if you hold down the Next Page button for about a second before releasing it, the Kindle will jump to the end of the list. Similarly, holding the Previous Page button will jump to the beginning. For a Book: 1. While in the eBook, roll your select roller up from the “menu” one notch (so it is over the progress bar) and click it. You will get a ruler showing all of the bookmarks (as tabs) and a representation of the number (1, 2, … 0) keys. If you have set no, or few, bookmarks, simply press the “next page” bar and you will zoom to the end. 1. If you have set bookmarks, press the “0″ key to move close to the end, and then press the “next page” bar. The numeral keys will move you to relative positions in the text. 2. Alternatively, you can always go into the “menu” and select “Go to Location.” By putting in a location number greater than the maximum that shows (e.g., something like “9999″), you will go directly to the end. http://thekindle.wordpress.com/2008/...or-for-a-book/ |

Here's a trick you can use to get a line of text flush with the top of the screen.
1. Roll the cursor up to the line that you want. 2. Click and add a highlight. Just highlight the next line or whatever you want. 3. Click menu and go to "My Notes & Marks" 4. Choose the appropriate highlight. 5. The highlighted text will now be flush with the top of the screen. 6. You can remove the highlight by clicking on it if you don't want to keep it. I wish a partial page scroll keyboard shortcut was found, but this will have to do for now. |

Is there any way to get the browser to 'do frames'?

Have you switched it to "advanced mode"?

Yep. Apparently, that allows for JavaScript, but not Frames.
Thanks. |

The battery life of the Kindle is an excellent feature. That said, all my exciting moments have been due to a flat battery.
-As already noted, it will not charge while in USB Drive mode. In fact it (somehow) uses power and will die if you leave it on your computer all night without the power cord. -If you leave the Whispernet on while on a commercial flight (Hey, I forgot!) the battery will go flat. -If all else fails, do not panic, and plug the fool thing in. In my case, this step has always cleared up the problem. |

Reading
Hey, I'm helping my grandma out with the Kindle since we just bought it for her for her 85th birthday... is there anyway I can make the books she's read have a checkmark or some kind of mark next to them to signify that she has read it or not? Thanks

Hi and welcome to mobileread
I almost missed your question since it's in a very old thread from 2007. A quick answer to your question is no - you cannot mark books off as read. Most people either delete books from the Kindle once read (any you've got from Amazon can still be downloaded again) OR file them away into a "Read" or "Completed" collection. A 'collection' can help to organise the books you have on your Kindle. They work a bit like folders on a computer although they are technically not folders but actually labels which are assigned to each book. For instance, I have a collection called 'Reading Now' which is where (you probably guessed) I store all the books I'm currently reading. It's a way of grouping books together. To set up a collection on your Kindle, make sure you're on the Home page (press the Home button) then press Menu and select Create New Collection. Give your collection a name and click on Save. If your collection seems to have disappeared then click right up to the top of the screen on your 5-way controller, click to the right and select Collections. This will now display all your collections before any book titles. There are various ways to add books into a collection. You can select a book, click right on the square 5-way controller button and choose Add to Collection. Or you can select a collection, press Menu, choose Add/Remove items and organise multiple books. Tip - while using the latter method, press the Menu button again to Add all the Items on This Page. This is a very fast way to organise your books. OR if you want to know how to delete books refer to: http://www.kinworm.com/2011/02/q-12-...om-kindle.html |
