split 2-column doc into single columns

I've just got my Amazon Kindle DX with the intention to replace a giant heap of scientific papers with its native PDF reading. Alas, 2-column documents are a bit too small in portrait, and in landscape require too much up-down movement.

Is there any good way to split each two-column page into two separate columns?

Does the DX reflow? Try zooming and see. This is the easiest way to take a two-column page and convert it to a single column.

DX neither reflows nor zooms at the moment. My current idea is to reprocess PDF before loading.

It is hard to believe that Amazon is actually using the Adobe reader and then disabled all the good features. What were they thinking? Yes, some sort of reprocessing seems the only solution. There are some tools available that you can use, although I believe they create images but if you can't zoom anyway perhaps it is ok.
