Kindle print function

Does it make sense to allow Kindle to have print function? So we can print out some pages that we are interested in.

It has a screen capture function that you can then move the files over to a pc.

Aside from the save-current-screen-to-jpg function, I'm sure Amazon doesn't think a print function makes sense. They don't want us to print out whole books and then pass them on to somebody else.

I think that's what people said when computers first came out... how they would reduce the use of paper and all offices would be paperless soon (they were saying this in the 80s).

Yet computers actually made it easier to produce reems of paper. ARGH!

I think computers save more paper than you know. How many people view this site every day? If it were not for computers, each person would probably be viewing content that is now on web pages, in a magazine. How many people don't get paper magazines / newspapers anymore because the content is available on MSNBC.com or CNN.com for free? Also think of all of the trade magazines, catalogs, and pornography! All of that stuff has moved online now, for the most part.

(sorry to go off on a tangent! )

YEs, in the last few years, with the proliferation of broad band that is true. But, when computers first came out it wasn't.

I am actually planning on digitizing my movie collection soon too. Mostly to save space in the house while having instant access to them.

Printing

What if you wanted to print a few pages, say in a workbook or a book of plans, can it be done easily? What is involved in screen capture and transferring to a file on the PC? Is this easy or as cumbersome as it sounds?

First you mush have an SD card for the screen capture function to work.

- Alt+Shift+G, will create a .gif image of that particular page on your Kindle's SD card
- After capturing all the pages you want, connect the Kindle to your computer with the USB cable
- Your Kindle will be recognized as a mass storage drive. Find your SD card and you'll see all the .gif images you've collected. You can either drag and drop them to the computer or select them all, right click on your selection and choose print from the menu (in Windows - not sure about the Mac)

That's it.

Yes, a PRINT function would be useful.

Hi, all. I'm new to this forum.

I was, like you, certain that there would be no need for a print function.

However, as more and more newspapers cease to publish hardcopies and move to electronic only publication, I have begun to consider subscribing electronically to one or more newspapers.

So what? You ask. You can still read everything on the Kindle or other e-book reader. Why do you need a print function?

Well, when I thought of subscribing to a newspaper, I realized something. What happens to all those great grocery-store coupons? Are they published electronically? Are they omitted?

If they are omitted, what a GREAT market potential!

If they are already included, then it would be necessary to PRINT them in order to submit them to the grocer.

Many grocers do not accept printed coupons, though that is quickly changing.

Just my 2 cents worth!

This is not true with the Kindle 2. It will put it in the screenshot in the documents directory.

It used to be true for the Kindle 1, but I don't know if anyone has tried it without an SD card since the 1.2 update; it might work like the Kindle 2 now.

Check the date on that post. It was pre-Kindle 2. For K2 the .gif file is now located in the "documents" folder.

The Kindle has the ability to clip articles and clip highlights. I do it all the time when reading the NY Times on it. These clippings are saved in the "My Clippings" txt file in the Documents folder on the device. You can print that in whole or in part. It's not elegant, but it works alright for saving the occasional bit of info to refer to later.

What I really want is the ability to email clippings right from the device. I frequently find myself wanting to send an article to a friend, but it's too much trouble to clip it and then load it up on a computer when I get back home.
