FREE (and bargain) books for the Kindle - January 2011

It's a new month and there are new freebies. Several from last month are still free, so be sure to check the previous thread, HERE.

This is the sticky thread for free and bargain books in the Kindle store for January 2011. Rather than try to update the first post with a list of all the books, which is continually changing, instead new books will be posted at the end of the thread and each month there will be a new thread, letting the old one drop off the top of the forum. Anyone can post to the thread, but there are a few rules:
  1. Only books in the kindle store. Yes, I realize that free books elsewhere will often work on the Kindle, but those should be reported in the Deals forum. This list is for those who only get their books from the Kindle store (and there are many who do) and don't want to deal with having to download and transfer books from elsewhere.
  2. Do not edit old messages to add new books. Most people read this thread by clicking to see new posts. If you edit old messages, then no one is notified of a new post and often won't see the updates when they click to see new messages. If you need to edit an old message to correct a link or other info (or even want to note a book that is no longer free), that is perfectly ok.
  3. No shortened URL's. No one likes to click on a link and end up somewhere that they were not expecting and few of the URL shorteners allow you to set up a preview mode so that you get a chance to see the destination first. So, use the full URL in your posting (yes, you can still just post a link on the title, but with the full URL, everyone can look at the status line or use Copy Shortcut to see where they will go before the new site opens).
  4. No author self-promotions (unless your book is free in the Kindle store) or self-published books. If you are a Kindle author and posting another's work, it should be either a non-self-published book or one that you've read to the end and would not feel embarrassed to recommend to your mother, closest friends and priest/minister (assuming they read the same genre). In other words, the writing is exceptional (no misspellings or substituted words, grammar rules obeyed formatting that looks good on the Kindle screen). It isn't that we don't want you to post, but author self-promotions can overwhelm the list and a special child forum in the Deals and Bargains section has been provided for this purpose.
  5. No excerpts or sample chapters (business minis are ok, so long as they are not just samples of another book)
  6. Please indicate the price of any book that is not being offered free. You don't have to say "free" if one is, but it would be nice if you include that in the message. The maximum price for bargains is a bit flexible, but generally under $2 and nothing over $5, unless it is a volume that contains several titles in one and the total price per book puts it into the bargain realm or the digital price is below 25% of the list print price and 50% of the digital list price; this lets you include high priced reference books or cookbooks that are extremely heavily discounted, for one reason or another (but, let's not include books that Amazon has at $9.99 all the time, ok?).
  7. If you see the genre of a book and it isn't clear from the book description that you post, please include it; conversely, if someone leaves this off, don't post to berate them, but you can post to include that info for others.
  8. If you are posting a book that is free in the UK Amazon store, please say so. Also, if you do not have your current location set in your profile (below your name, it shows next to all of your posts), then add that to your post (as it "this is free here in Canada"). To all: please note that whether or not a book is free in a country other than the one a person is logged into is not easily discovered. The person who posts often has not way to determine that you will pay a different amount if you are in a different country. Also, prices at Amazon can change minute to minute and freebies can last as little as an hour (possibly less), so always check the price before one-clicking. If you discover that a book costs more (other than the "standard" $2+VAT international fee Amazon often takes onto books outside the US), you may leave a single comment with the country and price/restriction (for example: "This book costs $9.99 in the UK" or "Not available in Canada").
  9. Try to keep chit-chat to a minimum. That will keep notifications of a new message in the thread down to (generally) only when a new book has been posted, making the thread more useful for all.
If you agree or disagree with the rules, have more to be added, etc, please send me a private message, rather than replying here. I'll discuss it with the moderators and we'll modify as needed.

Updated to reflect that the Kindle Deal of the Day and the Kindle Student Deal of the Day pages is now expired.

-------------------------
A large number of "permanent" freebies expired at the end of the year (bye-bye Harlequin 16!) and those cookbooks that were free last year are now $10-$17! Here are all the current freebies that are actually "books" (self-contained, at least a short story or novella), arranged by genre. The list can change at any time (one freebie posted this morning was already back to full price by evening), so always check the current price before clicking to purchase.

Soul Identity, by Dennis Batchelde, is free in the US Kindle store.

Book Description
You can't take it with you...but what if you could? Most people believe their souls outlive their bodies. Most people would find an organization that tracks their souls into the future and passes on their banked money and memories compelling. Scott Waverly isn't like most people. He spends his days finding and fixing computer security holes. And Scott is skeptical of his new client's claim that they have been calculating and tracking soul identities for almost twenty-six hundred years. Are they running a freaky cult? Or a sophisticated con job? Scott needs to save Soul Identity from an insider attack. Along the way, he discovers the importance of the bridges connecting people's lives.

Avempartha , by Michael J. Sullivan, is free in the US Kindle store.

Book Description
The secret is in the tower. The problem is the beast. The answer is two thieves.

When a destitute young woman hires Royce and Hadrian to help save her remote village from nocturnal attacks, they are once more drawn into the schemes of the wizard Esrahaddon. While Royce struggles to breech the secrets of an ancient elven tower, Hadrian attempts to rally the villagers to defend themselves against the unseen killer. Once more, what begins with the simple theft of a sword places the two thieves at the center of a firestorm — but this time the outcome could change the future of Elan.

Bargain book:

Valeria's Last Stand: A Novel by Marc Fitten for $1.24 (from $9.99), Amazon Best of the Month, May 2009

Quote:
Product Description

When it comes to the sizes of fishes and ponds, Valeria is a whale in a thimble. She harrumphs her daily way through her backwater Hungarian village, finding equal fault with the new, the old, the foreign and the familiar. Her decades of universal contempt have turned her into a touchstone of her little community - whatever she scorns the least must be the best, after all. But, on a day like any other, her spinster's heart is struck by an unlikely arrow: the village potter, long-known and little-noticed, captures her fancy, and Valeria finds herself suddenly cast in a new role she never expected to play. This one deviation from character, this one loose thread, is all it takes for the delicately woven fabric of village life to unravel. And, for the first time in a long time, Valeria couldn't care less.

Valeria's Last Stand is a joyfully wise small-town satire that takes an hilariously honest look at later-in-life romance and the notion that it's never too late to start anew.

It's not often that these deals are of books that I have heard of. But the Hazlitt changed my life when I read it in 1974, and I have been recommending it ever since.

The one on Kindle appears to have been updated twice (once in 61 and again for the edition on sale now). He wrote a new intro and added a section on rent control (that he rewrote apparently in the latest edition).

Tick Tock by James Patterson with Michael Ledwidge is up for free pre-order.

This has a different cover from Tick Tock - Free Preview: The First 28 Chapters, so maybe the new free pre-order will be the full book instead of just a preview, but who knows?

Product Description
NYC's #1 detective, Michael Bennett, has a huge problem--the Son of Sam, the Werewolf of Wisteria and the Mad Bomber are all back. The city has never been more terrified!

Tick--a killer's countdown begins

A rash of horrifying crimes tears through the city, throwing it into complete chaos and terrorizing everyone living there. Immediately, it becomes clear that they are not the work of an amateur, but of a calculating, efficient, and deadly mastermind.

Tick--Michael Bennett is on the chase

The city calls on Detective Michael Bennett, pulling him away from a seaside retreat with his ten adopted children, his grandfather, and their beloved nanny, Mary Catherine. Not only does it tear apart their vacation, it leaves the entire family open to attack.

Tock--your time is up

Bennett enlists the help of a former colleague, FBI Agent Emily Parker. As his affection for Emily grows into something stronger, his relationship with Mary Catherine takes an unexpected turn. All too soon, another appalling crime leads Bennett to a shocking discovery that exposes the killer's pattern and the earth-shattering enormity of his plan. From the creator of the #1 New York detective series comes the most volatile and most explosive Michael Bennett novel ever.
