How to customize tags from downloaded metadata

I like using tags, and some of the tags downloaded are useful, but many are not.

For example, the "General" tag. What is this even supposed to mean? Some other tags will be repetitive such as "Programming" and "Programming Languages." I would just like one tag "Programming."

Where do these tags originate from? From Google or are they associated with the ISBN number?

Besides, my curiosity on how tags originate, I would still like to use metadata downloads to auto populate tags for my books, but I would like to block certain tags from being downloaded such as "General" or "Programming Languages" when "Programming" itself would suffice.

How do I go about doing this? Thanks

It depends what metadata sources you have selected. Personally, I disbelieve in all tags unless I manually set them.

...

I agree "General" is a pretty pointless tag. Check out the tag mapper, you should be able to get some control over them.

But is there a way to block certain metadata tags from being downloaded to begin with?

thanks

Yes, use the tag mapper.

For your situation above, you'd want a rule saying roughly "If the tag General is found, delete it" and one saying "If the tag "Programming Languages is found, replace it with Programming" (or vice versa, but Programming is more general than languages, so that's the direction I'd go.)

The tag mapper is available to add to the toolbar if you use it frequently, and you probably will to begin with. Otherwise, find a book, press ctrl-D, press the "configure download". From there you can configure which sources you fetch tags or anything else from, and use the "Create rules to filter/transform tags" button to open the tag mapper.

There is a Master CONFIGURATION setting for Metadata downloads. In addition, Each site also has a configuration.
Some sites provide (IMHO) garbage, series info (I remove the tick next to their 'Series, Just about everything is configurable (within the limits of the site )

So Cherry pick your metadata
Set the Cover source priority numbers

Remove the ticks from sites you Know won't help yor search, to speed things along

Where are some good threads on this forum or a website to find the best metadata sources so I can research the best sources? Calibre comes with some defaults checked. I am assuming they may not be the best.

thanks

@Mindful : Have a look at the Metadata Source plug-ins, there's a list of them here ==>> Index of plugins

AFAIK you need site specific plug-ins to download metadata.
