It's still a mystery that the international phonetics alphabet is not more in use unless it has to do with the size of the required keyboard...

You'll never know how to correctly pronounce the name Vercingétorix unless you are French. Even for Anglophones who have spent most of their lives with Francophones it's next to impossible. The syllables 'un', 'in', 'on' are physically difficult and some never master it. Vice versa, 'th' is as complicated for the French.

Trust me... If you had Mrs. Nagourny for Sophomore French, you would NEVER mispronounce his name... twice.

Truly one of the most frightening, humiliating, debilitating experiences of my academic endevors. I still break out in a cold sweat just remembering it, and that was almost 50 years ago.

My author friend committed suicide yesterday.

I think it was because he was suffering from "writer's block", but I'm not sure.

He didn't leave a note.

Fortunately, Vercingetorix has an Anglophonic pronunciation, a la Paris, but I realize it wouldn't fly in French class. In other contexts we say versinJETericks, which seems fair enough given his Gallic war context.

As for "th", the real heartbreaker must come when you discover that there are two pronunciations of "th." "Thine" and "thin" have a different "th", as do "this" and "thistle," just as two examples.

The 'th' sounds don't occur in Japanese either, and trying to learn them is becoming an exercise in hilarity for my Senior Citizen Class students... as they watch each other try to stick their tongues 'just far enough out' beyond their teeth to make the sound. Same laughter when trying to learn to make the 'wo' sound of 'wood.' That doesn't exist in Japanese either, so it comes out as 'ood.' We dangle a thin strip of paper in front of the lips so we can see if there is exhalation with the sound... to see a room full of septuagenarians blowing on little strips of paper, pursing their lips, then shouting 'ood!!!!' makes it difficult for anyone to keep a straight face!

I tell them to practice when on the crowded trains.. People will quickly move away from them and they can get a seat!

As we go into a new year, with a chance to review our values, just think on this. Money is no object.

Especially in that sentence. It's the subject.

I was once told that the reason we can't produce certain sounds was due to the development of our facial muscles. Once the muscles were fully grown (or matured or trained and the like) it would be very difficult even impossible to speak a foreign language like a native born person. I forgot the age when that occurs maybe early teens?

Voice artists train for many many hours with a speech coach to be successful in the entertainment field.
