Post Hugo, Victor: Les misérables (French) v1 30 June 2012

Victor Hugo (1802-1885) is one of the best known French writers, the most important Romantic one and one the country's best poets. He's best known (at least outside France) for his novels "Notre-Dame de Paris" and "Les misérables".

"Les misérables" (1862) is one of the great 19th century novels. Great in quality and in length. It focuses on the life, struggles and redemption of an ex-convict, Jean Valjean. There are also long passages of the book dealing with subjects apparently separated to the story, like the battle of Waterloo or the streets in Paris, and the writer manifests himself talking about history, politics, religion, etc. However, all this adds to the character of the novel, and it becomes a book definitely worth reading.
