PDF output characters spaced unevenly

The PDF conversion output from my Kindle books has very uneven character spacing (kerning?) -- varies a lot between too tight and too loose. I cannot find any option to fix that or relevant help. Sorry if this is elementary, but I assume it might involve font manipulation.

Thanks. --David

This happens in Foxit, Firefox, Chrome and Acrobat. So it appears to be something intrinsic to the PDF generated by Calibre.
