The next two books in Douglas Lindsay's Barney Thomson series are out in ebook from Blasted Heath. $2.99 at Amazon US and Kobo, 1.99 pounds at Amazon UK. Current multi-use 40% off Kobo coupon applies, code vouchercodes40, for a net price of $1.79.

The Resurrection Of Barney Thomson (Barney Thomson #4)
UK Kobo

Quote:
At the end of MURDERERS ANONYMOUS, Barney Thomson's future seemed bleak. In fact, it seemed non-existent. However, for a reason that he can't quite get to the bottom of, he finds that he has a whole new lease of life as personal barber to the First Minister of the Scottish Executive. Unexpectedly thrown into the world of political intrigue and scandal, Barney's life is at least given some consistency when a serial killer begins to pick off members of the cabinet in a series of brutal (but very popular) murders.
The Last Fish Supper (Barney Thomson #5) UK Kobo

Quote:
Barney Thomson is a restless soul in search of a quiet town in which to settle. He thinks he might just have found it in Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae and life can at last bring him some peace. Or, at least, it might have done, but for the dead body at the bottom of the stairs, the ghost tormented for all time to go to the bathroom, the evil Chinese businessman, the disturbing package in the freezer, the mysterious cathedral, Barney's deaf, mute, hunchbacked assistant, the ancient society protecting a 2,000-year-old secret, the Vatican spies, the intended murder, the curious collective of ninety-year-old men looking for Robbie Williams' haircuts, the promiscuous vicar named Judas, the rookie exorcist, the volatile cheese sandwich, and the very outside possibility of Armageddon. And, at the end it all, twelve men will meet around a table and the very future of humanity will be decided. Either that, or they will go home for a cup of tea and a plate of chips.

I've just bought the remaining 4 in this Lindsay series from Kobo, using vouchercodes40, all at the same price $1.79.

Interestingly books 2 and 3 are straight Epub, but books 4 and 5 are Adobe DRM.

All downloaded and cleansed in Calibre without prob.

That is interesting.

And guess what? Now you have to go back there, because I just found #6 is out for $2.99. It is only at Kobo and DRM free.

The Haunting Of Barney Thomson - A Serial Killer Thriller

Quote:
As Barney Thomson is closing up his barbershop for the night, an old man enters looking for a Cary Grant cut and a bit of a chat. The following day, Barney discovers that last night's customer appears to have been the captain of a fishing trawler found mysteriously abandoned on the Clyde over a hundred years ago.

In a sinister echo of the past, a trawler is discovered drifting in a flat calm just off the island of Cumbrae, where Barney lives and works. Of the three trawlermen known to have been on board the Bitter Wind, one is found dead on the vessel. The other two are missing.

As the ghosts mount up for Barney, could it just be that he is in an episode of Scooby Doo, featuring a lot of villains in masks? Or is it a real, dark and menacing evil which haunts his sleepy seaside town?

THE HAUNTING OF BARNEY THOMSON is book 6 in the Barney Thomson series.

Where Serpents Lie by T. Jefferson Parker, $.99 a couple of weeks ago, now free.

Quote:
A brilliant novel of one man's quest to protect the innocent, as he tries to face down a terrible guilt locked in his own past.

Terry Naughton is head of the Crimes Against Youth unit of the Orange County Sheriff's Department. He's seen plenty of heinous criminals in his years on the force, but nothing could have prepared him for the Horridus.

Abducting children from their beds, dressing them like little angels and releasing them the next day, the Horridus is a pedophile living an escalating fantasy, Naughton believes. A fantasy that will soon lead to sexual depravity and beyond.

When shocking and seemingly factual accusations put his career on the line, he must confront his dark past. Even if he can clear his name, can Naughton do the same for his conscience?

Not free, but I noticed that the first in the 87th Precinct series by Ed McBain, Cop Hater, is $2.99 (part of Amazon's monthly 100 Kindle books for $3.99 or less sale).

Right!

52 free stories (one a week or one a day) from Le French book. Actually, it's more like a serial than stories the way I understand it. Need to sign up for this.

Quote:
Sign up to get 52 short stories by seven of France's top authors, who got together to play a collaborative writing game. They each wrote an episode, passing it on to the other, and so forth, until all seven had contributed to each story. They set traps, had fun and used their prowess to continue and conclude each story. The result is this collection of short stories: some are zany, some are clever, some are just plain weird, and all show the incredible creative skill of these very fine writers.

In France, this collection came out as a calendar. We have translated it and are giving the stories away: you can choose to get a daily dose (an episode a day) or a weekly story.

If you chose a daily subscription, you will receive an installment every morning at 6 a.m. Eastern Standard Time for 365 days.
If you chose a weekly subscription, you will receive a full story every week for an entire year.

In both cases, you will receive the first one within the hour.
Link to sign up. I don't think there are affiliate codes in here, but it's from an email.

Free from University of Chicago Press: Last Words of the Executed by Robert K. Elder.

Quote:
Some beg for forgiveness. Others claim innocence. At least three cheer for their favorite football teams.

Death waits for us all, but only those sentenced to death know the day and the hour—and only they can be sure that their last words will be recorded for posterity. Last Words of the Executed presents an oral history of American capital punishment, as heard from the gallows, the chair, and the gurney.

The product of seven years of extensive research by journalist Robert K. Elder, the book explores the cultural value of these final statements and asks what we can learn from them. We hear from both the famous—such as Nathan Hale, Joe Hill, Ted Bundy, and John Brown—and the forgotten, and their words give us unprecedented glimpses into their lives, their crimes, and the world they inhabited. Organized by era and method of execution, these final statements range from heartfelt to horrific. Some are calls for peace or cries against injustice; others are accepting, confessional, or consoling; still others are venomous, rage-fueled diatribes. Even the chills evoked by some of these last words are brought on in part by the shared humanity we can’t ignore, their reminder that we all come to the same end, regardless of how we arrive there.

Last Words of the Executed is not a political book. Rather, Elder simply asks readers to listen closely to these voices that echo history. The result is a riveting, moving testament from the darkest corners of society.

I somehow misread the Parker title as 99 cents, when - as noted - it was free.

I now picked it up.

Thank you!
