With only hours to go before the robot Skitz is taken out of her custody and moved to market testing, behaviorist Paula Kingsley begins to suspect that the machine she'd been charged to nurture developmentally has chanced into self-awareness. But despite Skitz's emotionally jarring reactions to their various tests, Paula and Philip are forced to consider the possibility that Skitz's humanesque gesticulations are simply a curious side-effect of his underlying hazard avoidance algorithm. "Humanesque" asks the question: If modern science cannot properly account for human consciousness, how could it possibly be expected to recognize the advent of artificial consciousness?"
