I have seen and read in the forum that the Kindle DX just have a larger screen than the usual Kindle but nothing more. Kindle 2 I think is better still. The DX series is not an upgrade of the Kindle 2 or 1.

It most certainly is for me. One I read books in a larger font - the DX will show more of the test. Two - where I work I can get virtually any journal article in PDF form. The DX will be perfect for this. In neither case does the K2 equal the DX.

But bear in mind that the DX will not support the AZW (Mobi) books that the current Kindle does, so for most people it will not be an "upgrade".

What's next? One would hope that "next" would be a rollout of the Kindle to those 95% of us who cannot currently buy it.

Hmmm - I read that it didn't. My apologies for being misinformed!

If the new unit supports native pdf, shouldn't the K2 be able to do so as well with a firmware update?

Any device can support any format with the appropriate firmware update.

I beg to differ. Embedded hardware capability of your device is an important factor, too. ePub, for example, requires - in comparison - considerable processing power and free memory. See Sony's response as to why the Sony PRS-500 does not have ePub support:

Quote:
The ability to access EPUB books and reflow standard text-based PDF documents opens the device to a world of new content. We’ve also seen the requests from PRS-500 users about making an upgrade available for that model. After lengthy discussion and investigation of different solutions, we determined that such an upgrade would not be technically feasible. Instead of leaving our early fans out in the cold, we’d like to thank them for being among the first to recognize the benefit of the Reader so we’re offering a special trade-up program. ...

Keep on reading,

That is what they said, but the fact that Bookeen has implemented the mobile Adobe Digital Editions on a Cybook Gen3 is an indication that Sony was mistaken. ADE might only be made available for the newer Gen3's (twice as much RAM and 2x the CPU speed of the original version), but it it works on the original Gen3s these had very minimal hardware even for an ebook Reader.

Was the PRS-500's hardware less capable than the original Gen3's?

One sec, *is* ADE available for the original Gen3 or is it not? First you said they implemented it, but then you said it's only available on the newer devices?
