LIT->LRF Conversion - Quirky Base Font Size Setting

Hi Everyone,

I'm a new member here at the forums (I just bought a PRS-505 off ebay). I am trying to convert a bunch of DRM free LIT ebooks to LRF using Calibre (I would go with EPUB but I do prefer the justified text in LRF). My current issue is the following:

I am trying to lower the font size as the default font size when using the "Sony Reader" profile and the LIT to LRF conversion in Calibre seems a bit too large for my taste. I tried setting the Base Font Size to 8pt to test it out, but it is acting a little strange.

The bulk of the text in the paragraphs does actually become smaller (presumably displayed at 8pt). However, any titles/Chapter Titles , Headings and the Table of Contents are now displayed even larger than before. This seems odd since I'd assume that everything would scale down?

I'd appreciate any help anyone could provide me. I've tried searching the forums and changing a bunch of things in Calibre but I haven't been able to figure this out. Also, if it won't work directly via Calibre, how can I go about manually editing the font sizes for the Headings and main body text before doing the LIT-->LRF conversion?

Thanks a lot!

PS - A special thanks to Kovid for all the hard work he has put into Calibre

Not only set the base font but also set the Font Size Key. The pop up note for this key says,
Quote:
Mapping from CSS font names to font sizes in pts. An example setting is 12,12,14,16,18,20,22,24. These are the mappings for the sizes xx-small to xx-large, with the final size being for huge fonts. The font rescaling algorithm uses these sizes to intelligently rescale fonts. The default is to use a mapping based on the output profile you chose.
Try changing this key to something small, along the lines of what your looking for.

8,8,10,10,10,12,12,12

Personally being 50 years old I start with a base font of 16 and set my font size key to: 16,16,18,18,18,18,20,20

Good Luck

Hi dwanthy,

Thanks for your reply. I had actually tried playing with the key but I am getting some strange results. As an example:

Case A:
- Set base font size as 4pt (Very small! Just testing things out at the moment)
- Set font size key 8,8,10,10,10,12,12,12

Case B:
- Set base font size as 4pt (Very small! Just testing things out at the moment)
- Set font size key 16,16,18,18,18,18,20,20

The weird thing is that the text in Case B is much smaller than in Case A! This makes no sense to me...unless I am fundamentally misunderstanding how base font size and font size key work.

I retried the conversion without the font key size (ie only changing base size) and now it is working as expected! I don't know what changed. Anyway, now the font sizes are changing consistently. However I am still confused by the behaviour with font key size and how that is affected by the font base size.

I too tried to play around with this for a long time, but never got the results I wanted. I asked Kovid about this a while ago in another post series on the base font and key map algorith, but Kovid didn't write the code (llasram did) for this stuff so he wasn't able to solve the issue:

Thanks for posting that slantybard. So it looks like base font size should probably not be used in conjunction with the key size? From the look of things, it seems that the base font size is inherently defined by one of the numbers in the font key sizes? I'm going to play with it a bit and report back.

orion2001 - I am not sure if the key determines the base size. I could never figure it out well enough to be sure. I mssg'd llasram but s/he never got back to me about the algorithm.

Thanks slantybard. I think I'll stick with base font size for now
