question regarding javascript and html in epub output

Hi I am new in epub format, but am very interested to add a publish to epub function in our course website authoring tool.
Before I start writing the function, I would like to know.
1. do we must produce xhtml instead of html files for the epub output?
2. is javascript supported in most epub reader( as we have a lots of interactive features using javascript. )
Thanks in advance.

Ad 1. Yes, ePUB uses XHTML
Ad 2. No, the ePUB v2 specs do not allow for javascript and most readers do not support it. In v3 of the specs it should be. However, that is not supported by a lot of readers (only 2 I believe to some extent).

You can look up the specs at the IDPF site.

Well, the SONY 650 supports JS, but not for ePubs, only for his GUI
