Links to Another Chapter's <h2>

I have an epub book in which I have set aside a separate chapter file for a given catergory—in this instance different areas where I have found wildflowers.

Within a given chapter I have set up under progressive headings families of flowers from that area and species within the families, moving down through <h1>, <h2>, and for some <h3> when necessary to differentiate between flowers of a larger flower family.

I have set up a table of contents linking to each of the *.xhtml chapter files and it all works fine. I'd like to be able to go one step beyond this, if possible but with no success.

This is what I'd like to do: Link from one epub chapter file down into a specific section within another chapter file. I've searched the Web in the HTML reference sites but, although I've done it for a Web page, using bookmarks/anchors, I can't figure out the correct coding to do this in my epub.

QUESTION: Is this capability just not available within the epubub format?


QUESTION: If it is possible & I've just missed it, can anyone tell me how to code a link that will chain down into another chapter file to, say, a <h2> heading within this file.

Example:
In the text of a chapter file, lawn-1.xhtml, I mention that Dogbane is related to a flower described in another chapter, meadow-3.xhtml. This second flower text is found within the second chapter under a <h2> heading: <h2 class="sectionname" id="heading_id_28">Common Milkweed</h2>).

Any guidance you can give will much appreciated.
