Android with Flash

My grandson wants something like an e-reader (same size, etc.) which has Android system which will allow him to watch YouTube videos.

We bought a Pandigital novel for him but it did not allow him to watch YouTube videos because, supposedly, it did not have necessary Flash installed. And so, we had to return it.

I've heard that Adobe has released Flash for Android (true or not I don't know?) which will work with Android systems.

Is there any eReader-type system that has the Android and Flash that will allow him to watch YouTube videos, etc.?

Android supports Flash from Android 2.2 onwards. However, Earlier versions can still play Youtube videos via the dedicated Youtube app.

There are some dedicated Android readers out, such as the newly announced Nook Color, but whether or not you can use the Android Market with them remains to be seen.

What you could do is just get an Android tablet, such as the, rather pricey, Galaxy Tab, then install the Kindle and Nook apps on it. He can then watch any kind of video he likes and be able to purchase books from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Someone suggested the Velocity Cruz. Do you know anything about that?
It is supposed to have Android 2, but don't know if it would play YouTube videos. (We are very new to all of this!)
What is the internal memory of the Cruz? Would you know?
Are there several different models?

Just had a look at the Velocity Cruz; the 2.0 and relatively slow processor mean it probably won't do everything your son will want it to.
The Galaxy Tab (there is a wireless only version also available) is the best of the current crop. Android tablets are going to get a whole lot better from the beginning of next year, once 3.0 gets released. I suppose you are buying it as a Christmas present, though?

I looked at the Galaxy Tab at Amazon ($173.00, which is not much more expensive than most of the others) and saw it had Android 2.1, which according to what you mentioned (Android 2.2 with flash) would not play YouTube videos. Is that correct?

Actually, my grandson is more interested in something that would allow him to connect to his email (at Hotmail) and watch YouTube videos. As I think I mentioned, he had Pandigital, but it would not allow him to watch YouTube videos.

Are there many of this type of Android units that do not have e-reader installed. He does not want the extra reader which he would never use. Similar to a netbook, but smaller like the Pandigital, Nook, etc.

I saw the Archos at J&R ($179.00) which says it can play YouTube even thought android is 1.5. Have you heard of this "tablet?"

Cruz will play YouTube videos with the Skyfire App installed.
Cruz also has a a preloaded app that can manage all of his email accounts.

The Cruz reader is somewhat limited memory wise for videos... it will play them, but the 250mb of RAM seem to be barely enough.

The Cruz Tablet has 512mb RAM and would probably support video better.

That being said, I'm getting by just fine with the Cruz reader for videos (just have to make sure no other apps are running in the background!).
