Who do you like better?
The battle Eastwood VS Wayne finally will be solved. I vote for Clint I think he makes a more realistic actor, and come on who else can make a poncho look cool . So lets get some action and hopefully some full fledged friendly arguments

John Wayne was an ok actor and perhaps if he had lived longer he would have had a chance to do a more diverse set of roles, but because he didn't Clint blows him out of the water.
Clint Eastwood has done so many different roles where John Wayne did the same role in every movie, a little type cast. |

Bruce Dern tells the story of how fairly late in Wayne's career Dern had the part of a man who shot and killed Wayne's character.
Wayne said to him, "You know that you're going to be the most unpopular man in America because you killed John Wayne." Dern replied, "Yeah, but they'll love me in Berkeley!" Dern says that Wayne got a kick out of that. |

Eastwood could still a heart from beating with his flinty-eyed stare. His westerns are still some of the best westerns ever made (I particularly like Pale Rider). And I have to admit that his speechless characters (or, more accurately, his characters who speak few words yet get the message across) really are tops. I thought the casting in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach) was inspired.

I voted for John Wayne, in part, because he created that sort of character. And, I might as well admit this, I actually got to meet him once when he was filming a movie in Florida and I happened to be there. Very cool!

I voted for Clint Eastwood, because I loved his film "Million Dollar Baby'. I watched it three times.
Also he makes tomato-ketchup and things..... |

I stand corrected, for some reason I thought he was only in his 50's, so that really makes his career more underwhelming
That was a joke, I looked up his early movies that I have never seen, I guess I spoke too soon. I still prefer Clint Eastwood. From Wikipedia, apparently John Wayne was a little bit of a racist, more likely a product of his age and upbringing. In an interview with Playboy in 71 he said about Native Americans.. I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them if that's what you're asking. Our so called stealing of this country was just a question of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.... Look, I'm sure there have been inequalities. If those inequalities are presently affecting any of the Indians now alive, they have a right to a court hearing. But what happened 100 years ago in our country can't be blamed on us today. I'm quite sure that the concept of a Government-run reservation... seems to be what the socialists are working for now — to have everyone cared for from cradle to grave.... What happened between their forefathers and our forefathers is so far back -- right, wrong or indifferent -- that I don't see why we owe them anything. I don't know why the government should give them something that it wouldn't give me. I thought it was interesting. John Wayne was a mans man and didn't mince words apparently Last edited by Mortis; 04-13-2011 at 08:40 AM. |

I voted Eastwood.
But in trying to explain why, I am seeing how difficult it is to compare actors of two different eras. Movie making has changed so much, and so has the general movie taste. Wayne loses but scores. The walk, the grin, that upward look from the height of his 1.93. Eastwood wins all the other rounds including the way he drinks, from shots, mugs, can, anything. He reinvented speaking through a cheroot. And the body? In the bridges he washes himself under the meditative eyes of Streep behind the curtain, and he is already what? 65. He can even play love scenes. The best ones are the ones with his gorilla in the two masterpieces of every which way. Seriously, Eastwood knows how to act man against destiny and other adverse forces. I think in a million dollar baby he was just monumental. An upward drift started with Honkytonk Man "This is a sweet, whimsical, low-key movie, a movie that makes you feel good without pressing you too hard. It provides Eastwood with a screen character who is the complete opposite of the patented Eastwood tough guys, ..." That was Roger Ebert. Of course, none of them are real actors, but just movie stars. |

I didn't vote, in Clint's early spaghetti western days he really sucked as an actor and John easily blew him out of the water. Clint must have invested some of his returns in acting lessons because in later years he developed into a pretty good actor and director. So it would depend on when in their respective careers we’re talking about.

John Wayne couldn't play serious, offended drunk things like that as good as Eastwood. Eastwood can play a really serious guy Wayne couldn't quite capture that as good. I like the part in "A Fist Full Of Dollars" with the offended donkey

Interesting side note Wayne lobbied to play the role of Dirty Harry but MGM thought he was too old (and I think they were right). The Duke is cool but he will always be a cowboy to me and thats ok. Clint has been successfull in many roles and he had the .44 magnum to "Make my Day."

So John Wayne is coming up in the rear?
That sounds so bad when we're not talking about a horse race! |
