Why do you need to register a Kindle
I have had several readers including my current blackberry and none of them have asked me to register my reader. Why do you need to register your reader? What do you get out of the registration process?

Registration allows you to buy directly from Amazon on your Kindle. It also allows you to access archived items stored at Amazon. If you don't register, you cannot use collections to sort.

The answer is that you don't "need" to register a Kindle, but that some of its features are not available to you until you do so.

Actually, without registering the device you can't buy a DRM'd ebook from Amazon that will open on the device period. Even the option to buy and download on a PC/Mac for sideloading is not available.
