No, that's not what it means. It means that (for example) the works of a Japanese author in Sweden enjoy the same protection under Swedish law as the works of a Swedish author would do. However, given the fact that Japan has a "life + 50" copyright term rather than Sweden's "life + 70", anything that is in the public domain in Sweden will most assuredly also be so in Japan.

I deal with international copyright law as a part of my job. I assure you that what I've told you is correct. All that you need concern yourself with is what is or is not in the public domain in Sweden, and EU copyright law is very straightforward in this circumstance: works enter the public domain at the start of the year following the 70th anniversary of the death of the author.

Of course, you may wish to consult a lawyer specialising in copyright law to verify this.

I trust you Harry, have no qualms about that. But I can't really quote Wikipedia or MR in a court of law.

Prosecutor: "You are accused of usurping the copyright of four Japanese authors":
Me: "Wikipedia said it was ok"
Judge. "Get this fool out of my court room".

But I will start with some author available at Aozora (Japan's Gutenberg). Unfortunately for ardegree Yanagita is not included there.

Yanagita died in 1962. So his works will be out of copyright in Japan in 2013, and in Sweden in 2033.

I usually check Wikipedia's references on the bottom of the page. If they are from an official source, then I accept it as accurate after a careful reading.

But that will be PD in Canada and Australia and any other countries which (still thankfully) follow the dead author + 50 years rules. That's why Raymond Chandler, who died in 1959, became PD in Canada this year.

So you could publish a Swedish translation, fully PD, in 2013 for the Canadian Swedish community and if, somehow, copies made it back to Sweden ... well, that's hardly your problem, right?
