On the upside. This vote looks like it's going to be a real opportunity for me to read something I've never thought of reading before.
I didn't even realise that The Maltese Falcon was a book. I thought it was just a movie - pretty dumb perhaps. Looks like it might be time to try something new - the old kind of new. |

I voted for The Spy Who Came In From The Cold without looking at the results or reading this thread beforehand. Now that I see the results, I think The Maltese Falcon will be an interesting selection. I honestly didn't know that the film was based off a book. I saw the film a long time ago but luckily have forgotten many of the twists and turns. At least, I think I have. If I start reading it, they may come back to me.
As for The Spy Who Came In From The Cold, it's in third now and I hope it at least ends up in second place so that it will be part of the second-chance month's selections. |

Actually, there are 3 movies based off of that book!

I always vote for what I want to read and hope that it wins. But in this case, even though The Firm isn't going to win, maybe The Maltese Falcon will be interesting. I'm hoping so.

I don't believe Hammett and Hellman were ever married.

Oddly enough, I watched a film last night about Dashiell Hammett without meaning to or realising it while watching.
I watched "Julia" knowing hardly anything about it (it's on a "to watch" list I chose randomly from). I didn't know it was based on anything true. In the film, the writer Lily had a mentor/lover named Dashiell. I thought it was an interesting coincidence. Once the film was over, I wikipediaed it and discovered it was based on a portion of a Lillian Hellman book. As I read, calling it a "true" film may be a stretch given Hellman's penchant for lying and the circumstances surrounding the real "Julia", but there's no doubt about Dashiell being real. |

Yes, I remembered that on the way home on Friday and never got back to MobileRead until now.
You'd never know it, though, to hear her defend and honor Hammett in her interview in the Paris Review. That interview is what made me think of her in the first place. |

I was only joking. Your use of quote marks makes it appear you're talking about a specific kind of book rather than dismissing boatloads of books you don't consider to be good.
A: Have you got any "So-Called" Literature? B: No, the "So-Called" Series is so popular we can't get any more in stock. By the way, we're going out of business tomorrow. Care for a PRS-350? |
