There is absolutely no evidence that the growth in France was due to HADOPI.

Here's an info graph that shows the before and after effects of Hadopi:

Not really as clear a trend line as Kali Yuga's post would have had me believe. And actually, revenue from music declined slightly in 2011 even though digital sales increased.

It's being shut down for political reasons, not based on its effectiveness. Sarkozy set up HADOPI, and he lost the election to his Socialist rival Hollande, who will probably shut it down.
I am still trying to understand whether you are being sarcastic or not.
You couldn't possibly be thinking that someone should be legally responsible for someone else hijacking their PC... or could you?
I mean... if someone steals my car and uses to commit a robbery, should I go to jail?
You MUST be kidding.

Here's an ad from 1930:

And the slogan from an ad campaign in the 1980s

And a relatively recent Greek slogan that reads "Piracy Kills Music":

Progress: Killing the music industry for more than 80 years.

No, but when you let someone drive your car and they get a parking ticket, you should pay it.

Note that parking tickets are given out on the first strike.

If you reported your car stolen at the time, that will indeed be a strong defense. If you claim someone must have taken your car on a joyride, the judge will have to decide on your credibility.

They might have tried to discourage it and blatantly lied in the process, but they didn't ever take someone to court and fine them for taping a handful of songs off the radio though, did they?

$190 is ridiculously lenient. They are doing him a favor. If they extradite him to the US and leave him to the tender mercies of the **AA, he'd be paying $600,000 for sharing 12 songs.
