Favourite public domain short story authors?
I am doing some additions to my free/cheap books webpage and want to beef up the short story offerings. I am sure I've read many great short stories, but I can't remember them all and wading through Project Gutenberg in search of them is a little daunting (hence, the rationale behind the website, to help people filter...) So far, I have Poe, Conan Doyle and Twain. Who else is there? I am looking for authors who are not just classic in their own right but who also have some appeal for modern readers.

How about O'Henry? I seem to recall my English teacher taught us he was the master of the short story. That was a long time ago.
And I think Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote a bunch of short stories. They may mostly appeal to the American history buffs, but many deal with universal themes. |

I am this week reading a number of Dahsiell Hammett shorts stories which I found at munseys.com. He's my favorite 20th century author.
