Two more Ian Rankin books for $3.79 each at Amazon, $3.99 at Kobo and B&N:

Let It Bleed Kobo B&N.

Quote:
The seventh novel featuring Inspector John Rebus, available for the first time as an e-book and featuring an exclusive introduction by author Ian Rankin.

Detective Inspector John Rebus understands that murder is usually very simple. Passion and greed are the most common motives, but when the bodies begin to pile up—two suicides, one murder, and the mysterious death of an inmate in one of Scotland's largest prisons—Rebus realizes that there's nothing simple about his latest case.

What Rebus knows is that it all began with a petty embezzlement scheme. What he discovers is that beneath the killings a conspiracy is hidden, one that runs all the way to the top of the political ladder. And the cost of unraveling this complex web could be horrifyingly high. Everything he holds dear—his job, his life, even his young daughter—is at stake.

Powerful men are telling Rebus to "let it take its course," but none of them will reveal just what it is. Rebus stubbornly decides to go forward with his investigation no matter what the cost may be. Men have died for whatever lies at the heart of this plot, and Rebus is determined that those who have set these events in motion will not escape the punishment they deserve.
Mortal Causes B&N Kobo

Quote:
The sixth novel featuring Inspector John Rebus, available for the first time as an e-book and with an exclusive introduction by author Ian Rankin.

Inspector John Rebus hates the Edinburgh Festival. He especially hates that last Saturday night. He has spent years on the police force confronting it, avoiding it, and cursing it, but most of the time he still gets caught up in it. Nevertheless, this is an honored tradition of Scotland, and a happy one at that. But amid the blaring noise created by the music, laughter, and toasts of "Slainte" as glasses of whiskey are swilled, another tradition—one older than music, happiness, and drink itself—has traveled to Edinburgh and nested itself in the medieval quarter of Mary King's Close. There, beneath the streets of Edinburgh, Inspector Rebus finds the lifeless body of Billy Cunningham swinging from a butcher's hook and knows that his problems have only begun.

When Big Ger Cafferty, the ruthless gangster whose sphere of influence extends well beyond the bars that the Inspector himself put him behind, discovers that Bill, his only son, has been brutally murdered, Rebus finds himself with more motivation than his duty can provide to find Billy's killer. But when the police pathologist reports that the young man was killed by professional hands, Rebus finds himself up against a force that could frighten Big Ger himself.

Another freebie in the Dotsy Lamb travel mystery series, Death of a Lovable Geek by Maria Hudgins.

Quote:
The body of young Froggy Quale lies, covered by a blue tarp, in the pasture behind Castle Dunlaggan in the Scottish Highlands. Froggy was the on-site pollen and spore expert at the nearby archaeological dig and a graduate student who doesn't seem to have had an enemy in the world.
Dotsy Lamb, ancient and medieval history teacher from Virginia, and her friend Lettie are boarding at the castle while Dotsy works at the dig. They and the other guests are cared for in the ancient castle by its owners, William and Maisie Sinclair.

Suspicion for Froggy's murder falls on his roommate, Van Nguyen, a graduate student from America. Dotsy has become fond of both Froggy and Van and is sure Van can't be the killer. When the dig's director dies from poison mushrooms, Dotsy sees connections to the magic mushroom party at the dig and to ownership of castle lands.

This is a suspenseful brainteaser that pits the brains of an American history teacher against the dark secrets of a tragic family history.

As its Free Friday selection, Barnes & Noble offers a historical thriller today:
Place Called Armageddon: Constantinople 1453 by C.C. Humphreys. Amazon has price matched the book.

Quote:
This is a powerful fifteenth century thriller that focuses on the Battle of Constantinople by rotating perspectives between various people from both sides. The storyline grips the audience as we learn why some from side come to fight (or defend) like Venusians, Achmed the farmer and John Grant the Scot. Although the myriad of cast can be confusing, each character adds depth to a vivid picture in which armchair fans will believe they are witnessing the siege of Constantinople from within and outside circa 1453. -- Harriet Klausner, The Mystery Gazette

Lorie - Please read the OP of this thread. We would appreciate it if you do not post self-pubbed books. Thanks.

So sorry about that. For some reason I read that as self-promoted books.

Free spy thriller today from Amazon: Thursday at Noon by William F. Brown, first published in hardback by St. Martin's Press, 1987. UK

Here are contemporary review excerpts:

The Orlando Sentinel: “Brown’s novel is a rainy-day adventure with each chapter ending with a cliff-hanging ending.”

The New Yorker: “A thriller in the purest cliffhanger vein… Mr. Brown’s technique is flawless. It could only have been learned by way of a thousand Saturday afternoon matinees.”

The Newport News VA Daily Press: “A thrilling tale of espionage. His novel never stands still for a second… An espionage thriller about a Cairo missile crisis you’ll want to read right through in one sitting… Brown ought to start writing the film script now.”

I consider self-published novels previously published by major publishers to be fair game, especially when an internet search turns up more information and reviews. A few of these self-pubs once resided in my bookcases.

Do you agree these books are an exception to the self-published rule?

Yes, I don't include backlist as self-pubs. That is really just a format change. I wouldn't post the NEW self-published books of authors who were previously trade published. In other words, the new books they are publishing on their own and have not been trade published, where the presence or quality of editing done is unknown.

Previously published by Avon/HarperCollins, and free on Amazon US:

Miss Zukas and the Raven's Dance by Jo Dereske

Publisher's Weekly:
Librarian Wilhelmina "Helma" Zukas confronts murder in Bellehaven, Wash., where interminable rain is a running gag as well as an appropriate background to her fitful romance with the chief of police. In her fourth adventure, Helma's New Age boss manipulates her into completing the catalogue at a wealthy eccentric's Native American cultural center when the prior cataloguer (whose sleazy past includes lack of proper library certification) is found dead in a bathroom stall. Despite a contrived finale in which Helma temporarily steps out of character, readers will gladly suspend disbelief because of her unwavering integrity. Helma's investigation seems secondary to Dereske's (Miss Zukas and the Library Murders) gentle chiding of the library world with true-to-life dialogue and personnel. Consistently straightforward, no-nonsense prose is a welcome bonus in this cozy.
