Epson Controler for Color E Ink

The Epson Broadsheet controller is used in many popular reading devices, such as the Kindle 2/DX, the Nook and the Sony PRS-600/900 (E-book Reader Matrix). Epson now appears to be E Ink's initial partner for a color capable controller.

From Linux Devices, New controller chip sets stage for color e-readers:

Further confirmation that color E Ink displays are on the way came today from Epson, which announced its new S1D13524

According to Epson, E Ink will offer an S1D13524 prototype kit "that will enable engineers to rapidly prototype and develop next-generation color e-paper products," though further details were not announced. In its statement, the company also quoted Hanvon Technology as saying it will launch a color e-reader by the end of this year, presumably using the S1D13524 and new screens from E Ink.

According to Epson, its S1D13524 will be sampling in June for $24. Production quantities will be available in December, the company says.
I would be surprised if we saw shipping color E Ink devices this year, but perhaps they will be available next spring.

Well, now...
I seem to remember a fair amount of products "launched" at CES that still haven't shipped.

They may "launch" this XMAS by showing the working prototype and promising shipment Real.soon.now.

Nowadays "launch" no longer means "ship".

So yeah, shipping anything but a few preview units does seem unlikely.
Otherwise they would've tried to freeze the market by pre-announcing at CES like everybody else.

Ahh, the ultimate: color eInk with the capability of millions of colors and a 250+ dpi pixel density. That has potential way beyond just reading: you're approaching a replacement for printed photography at that point. Personally, I think even next spring might be a bit ambitious, but by 2012 you'll see the first products on the market. They won't be great at first (I expect the first couple of generations of color eInk to display thousands of colors instead of millions and will likely look a bit muted), but by 2015 or so you'll probably start to see some serious eye-popping color. That'll be cool.
