Another freebie from Jo Dereske (prev published by Dell in 1996):

Savage Cut (Ruby Crane mysteries)

After her daughter's head injury in an automobile accident, Ruby Crane returns to the Michigan hometown she'd fled in disgrace seventeen years before. A forgery expert with a California detective agency, now her only concern is her daughter Jesse's recovery in her family's isolated lakeside cabin. Until an old friend's husband is killed in a sawmill accident and Ruby is drawn into old scandals this small town is determined to bury.

Two free mysteries by Eleanor Sullivan, one from small press Wyatt-MacKenzie, the other originally published in 2006 by Hilliard & Harris.

Cover Her Body, A Singular Village Mystery

Quote:
Death was not uncommon in 1830s Ohio. But murder?

In a strict, religious society in 1830s rural Ohio, a 16-year-old girl is murdered because she's pregnant, but the only person who suspects it wasn't an accident is Adelaide, a young, midwife, who worries that the remedy she gave the girl for a "woman's ailment" caused her death. Adelaide's husband, Benjamin, fearful that they'll be banned from the prosperous community, forbids her from questioning the girl's death. But a mistake she made years ago cost the life of a mother and her unborn babe, and Adelaide vowed to never let another mother die.

Pressure mounts when Adelaide is accused of harming the girl, but the allegation only fuels her determination to find the killer, even though she begins to suspect that her husband might be involved in the girl's death. And the more she investigates, not only does she start to question her own faith and beliefs, but she finds herself attracted to an unlikely man in the community, a man who has vowed to remain celibate. Then her questions alert the outside authorities and now this isolated community is invaded by the very society they had shunned.
Assumed Dead (Monika Everhardt medical mysteries)

Quote:
From the shadow of the St. Louis Arch to the ashes of the World Trade Center, Assumed Dead pulses with the authentic excitement of a busy ICU as head nurse Monika Everhardt uncovers the mysterious connection between a battered wife, an unidentified car crash victim and a long-missing man while laying to rest some ghosts of her own.

This one is published under their paid consulting/promotions program for self-published authors, not under their traditional publishing arm (which doesn't use branded imprints for each author):

http://www.wymacpublishing.com/latest5imprint.html

(checking their full list of imprints, I easily found at least one masquerading as another, larger imprint, so I assume the authors make them up, just as they do under KDP, and don't bother checking them against already established publisher names).

Definitely agree about previously published backlist - I love to see reasonably priced backlist titles come available as ebooks.

But, I personally also like to see self-pubbed ebooks that continue a previously established/published series that I like. I guess my tastes don't always run in touch with what sells enough for a major publisher to keep publishing - I've found this especially with historical mysteries, which just don't seem to do all that well in the US. I'm willing to take a bit of a gamble (or read a sample) and be a bit less picky about typos if it means I get the next "installment" in a series that I thought was defunct...

We could have a thread for self pubs that members have enjoyed, perhaps? With a short review, say fifty to a hundred words.
Anyone up for that?

Free from Wild Wolf Publishing: Bloody Mary by Ricki Thomas.

Quote:
From the best-selling author of Unlikely Killer and Hope's Vengeance...

Mary is a bitter woman who loves to meddle in other people’s business. But her manipulative world is thrown into turmoil when a face from the past returns and a rival is killed under mysterious circumstances.

Taking advantage of the situation, Mary sets out to reclaim her lost true love and attain the happy family life she has always longed for.

But someone is watching and is out to satisfy a deep-rooted revenge, threatening to destroy everything and everyone Mary holds dear.

As the stakes rise, the two are thrown towards a violent and devastating finale.

Trick Question (#3 in The Tubby Dubonnet Mystery series) by Tony Dunbar is free from booksBnimble.

Quote:
Dunbar’s invented a new genre--Call it Creole-Foodie-Noir:

For the discerning reader who enjoys a knowing chuckle, a sazerac, a bit of pompano en papillote, and a running travelogue of New Orleans along with his murders…

Medical lab janitor Cletus Busters is caught red-handed in a restricted area with the frozen head of Dr. Whitney Valentine, one of the lab's most prestigious researchers. Busters won't say much, except that he's innocent. But given his conspicuous record and past as a voodoo guru, all signs point to life in prison.

Calling Tubby Dubonnet!

With the trial less than a week away, Busters' lawyer has made exactly two motions--heading to the bar for several rounds of Wild Turkey and begging Tubby for help. Meanwhile, Tubby's taken on a new client - a female boxer with an abusive boyfriend - and also has to referee the romantic entanglements of his ex-wife and three teenage daughters.

But as Buster's trial proceeds, and the jury savors the startling evidence (alongside Dunbar's succulent descriptions of Crescent City cuisine), the danger mounts. Revealing the murderer could prove to be Tubby's biggest triumph – or his last case ever.

I LOVE this idea, whether it goes in this forum, or in the recommendations forum. A case could easily be made for such a thread belonging in this forum, since many of the self-pubs are relative "bargains", and many show up for free.
I do understand (most of the time) the resistance to self-pubs in this forum. I don't doubt that there are gems that crop up in the self-pub world, and there are plenty of examples that get mentioned in this forum (although not in this thread). A recommendation (as opposed to a cut-and-paste blurb) from someone trustworthy who has actually read a particular book goes a long way with me!

I would like to see something like this, but I (almost) never look at the recommendations forum. I have a couple in mind that I could provide recommendations for and start a thread if someone who DOES follow the recommendations forum knows that it would be appropriate and not shunned there...

Have you looked at the Author Self-Promotions forum? It's like the deals forum, but for authors plugging their own books.

Also, there is "The Shameless Promotion and Endless Plug-Your-Novel Thread" in the same forum.

If you want to recommend books, those go into the Reading Recommendations forum. As far as I know, there are no self-pub restrictions there. The restrictions are *here* because there is an entire forum dedicated for authors to promote their books.

Aaah, but this is not author self-promotion - this is for the specific case where a previously print-published series, read and liked by a MR member, is continued by the author (not the member) with one or more self-pubbed books.

I am traveling today and tomorrow, but over the weekend at the latest, maybe sooner if I get a chance, will look in the Recommendations forum to see if this seems as if it would fit, and will start up such a thread if it looks appropriate. I have two or three such series in mind off the top of my head. If anyone else (a moderator?) wants to comment first on the appropriateness, that would be great; otherwise I'll stick my nose out over the weekend.
