Kindle full screen
Probably some of you have noticed that although the screens of Kindle 4 is suitable for 600x800 images, there is always a big white border surrounding the book content. When reading a regular book, it wouldn't be an issue to have a white margin forced by Kindle. And it's totally understandable that we wouldn't want to see words at the edges of the screen so Kindle developers probably coded it that way to prevent words at the edges. However if you're reading a graphic novel/manga, the white border is not necessary, and it actually makes the whole image look smaller than it would with a full screen (either vertically or horizontally maximized). It would be great if there was a way to display all of the images full screen. However on Kindle 4, the only image that will use the whole screen is the cover image. All of the other images in the book content will have that white border around them and it seems that there's nothing that we can do about it. People who want to read graphic novels/mangas on their Kindles are searching for a solution but I think there is no solution yet.
What is the proper way to let the Kindle developers know about this problem? Or is there a way to get rid of the white border forced by Kindle? If Kindle developer are not willing to solve the problem, do you think it is not solvable/hackable? Example from the book "PANDORA: End of Days (sample)": The first image below is when you read the book regularly. There is a white border around the image. If you touch and hold, it brings the option to zoom and when you touch the zoom option you see the image in full screen as in the second image below. But when you turn the page it goes back to the smaller size. "Always display in fullscreen" must be possible but I think it needs to be hacked or something. don't know if you're still interested, but there is a way
I'm currently reading the walking dead on my kindle using the hidden image viewer. its hidden cuz it's not perfect, but a much better solution than having those margins.
I just converted the images from the .cbr of the comic I downloaded to greyscale 600x800 PNGs. Once you have that you compress them into a ZIP (or a CBZ, they both work) and put them into the documents folder on the kindle and it will show up like any other book. Only issue is it doesn't keep metadata (like book cover and author info) so it looks a little ghetto on the kindle. Once you open it just hit menu and enable fullscreen viewing, there's no bar on top or status bar at the bottom. It does remember where you left off, but the viewer is a little glitchy. Works good enough for me tho. Hope that helps. |

Eventually, KF8 fixed layout & 'Panel View' should be supported on Kindle Touch. That will involve more work to author, but it should be better than current options.
