There are people out there who would say The Bible is one of the worst books out there. Not I though.

That's actually a very good book... And I am an atheist. It's well written, has many genres, interesting tales etc.

Also, now I am curious to see Battlefield Earth.

Here's one I'll bet no one has ever heard of: DRIVIN' WOMAN by Elizabeth Pickett Chevalier. Published in 1942, it is a GONE WITH THE WIND knockoff. This is the opening paragraph:

"In that opaque land between sleep and wakefulness, she wrestled anxiously with the giant of her future. How could she, a girl—single-handed—restore the old way of life to Virginia in time to assure suitable marriages to herself and her three younger sisters."

The thing is 652 pages long, and large parts of it are in dialect.

Full disclosure: I didn't actually FINISH this book. Anyone who wants to try can find it at Abebooks.

Never a truer word said. There is a saying that everyone has a book in them - some, however, should leave it there!

At the very least, self-published authors owe it to their readers to check the spelling and grammar in the book; it's amazing how few seem to think that worth bothering with.

Ha! I've recently used that very line in the book I'm writing (well, a paraphrased version of it). Nothing on this earth is original etc. etc.

One of the worst I have read recently was The Main Chance by Colin Forbes. I was appalled by the terrible writing and awful and irritating characterisation, and in only about the 3rd or 4th time in my life, stopped reading (long) before the end. I could hardly believe this was the work of an established author.

Lol, that's good. It's like when I was being mean to the uSell guy and he responded I nearly peed myself!

Speaking of books I didn't like, anyone read "The Bear and the Dragon" by Tom Clancy? I was expecting spy thriller action like the rest of the original Jack Ryan series, and instead I got pages and pages of "Japanese sausage" I was very disappointed and disgusted.

If "50 Shades" is Mommy Porn, than TBatD (made that one up myself ) was Clancy Porn. Do not want.

The worst book I've ever read has to be A Tale of Two Cities, which we had to read at school. Its left me with an abiding hatred of all ADULT English classics especially Dickens. I can't even watch adaptations on TV.

On the other had school reading lists left me with a love of JRR Tolkien and Shakespeare's plays.

It's sad when that happens - I don't support the general dumbing down'of education that's happened over the past few decades, but something that's too challenging can result in exactly this dislike. I would encourage you to watch an adaptation, though - it really is a wonderful story, and I often find that a film can help people understand a book because the characters are more real to them. I prefer the Ronald Colman version, but the later version with Dirk Bogarde is more true to the book.
