Lost in Shangri-La: A True Story of Survival, Adventure, and the Most Incredible Rescue Mission of World War II by Michael Zuckoff

“A lost world, man-eating tribesmen, lush andimpenetrable jungles, stranded American fliers (one of them a dame withgreat gams, for heaven's sake), a startling rescue mission. . . . This is atrue story made in heaven for a writer as talented as Mitchell Zuckoff. Whew—what an utterly compelling and deeplysatisfying read!" —Simon Winchester, author of Atlantic

Award-winning former Boston Globe reporter Mitchell Zuckoff unleashes the exhilarating, untold story of an extraordinary World War II rescue mission, where a plane crash in the South Pacific plunged a trio of U.S. military personnel into a land that time forgot.

“A truly incredible adventure.” (New York Times Book Review )

“[A] gripplingly cinematic account. . . . A remarkable cast of characters. . . . A.” (Entertainment Weekly )

“This is an absorbing adventure right out of the Saturday-morning serials. . . . Lost in Shangri-La deserves a spot on the shelf of Greatest Generation nonfiction. It puts the reader smack into the jungle. ” (Cleveland Plain Dealer )

“Zuckoff transforms impressive research into a deft narrative that brings the saga of the survivors to life.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review) )

Just got "General and Mrs. Washington: The Untold Story of a Marriage and a Revolution" by Bruce Chadwick for $CDN 2.99 at amazon.ca

I've always been intrigued by Washington became a revolutionary; it seemed so improbable. Maybe this book holds the answer .

Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

Fun & Game Wardens: A Collection of Warden and Wildlife Magazine Articles by Ben Rehder, who has had mysteries published by Adams Media's Tyrus imprint (we got a few of the Blanco County ones mentioned in the blurb as rights-reverted KDP freebies a couple of years ago) and is still a current St. Martin's Press author.

Ben Rehder is best known for his hilarious Blanco County mystery series featuring Texas game warden John Marlin. But Rehder has written numerous magazine articles over the years, and this collection presents some of his favorites, with a focus on game warden anecdotes and Texas wildlife. Also includes a bonus excerpt from Rehder's Edgar Award-nominated first novel, Buck Fever. Don't miss it!

For everyone who complained about the battle and war books, something rather different.

A History of Market Performance: From Ancient Babylonia to the Modern World (Routledge Explorations in Economic History) Ed R.J. Van der Spek & Jan Luiten van Zanden & Bas van Leeuwen

The contributions focus on the market of staple crops, as they were crucial goods in these societies. Over this entire period, all papers provide a similar conceptual and methodological framework resting on a common definition of market performance combined with qualitative and quantitative analyses resting on new and improved price data. In this way, the book is able to combine analysis of the Babylonian period with similar work on the Roman, Early-and Late Medieval and Early Modern period.

Bringing together input from Assyriologists, ancient historians, economic historians and economists, this volume will be crucial reading for all those with an interest in ancient history, economic history and economics.

Fascinating

It never occurred to me that invariant low grain prices just after harvest suggested failure in the banking system.

And a discussion related to the Irish potato famine

And those who are trying to write about China have a whole new light to see it in.

And the (Eric Flint) 1632 Universe story in the Granville Gazette about farmers getting market prices by radio is reflected in data about the improvement in the Trans-Atlantic grain trade after the telegraph.

And measuring the volatility of nail prices in the US.

And of course Babylonian Barley prices.

You have to mentally translate from High Academic lingo as you read some passages though.
