Thanks, Fbone!
My quotes quiz went down quite well last time, so here's another. -- Quotes from famous people about famous people. One point for the person or said (or wrote) it, and one point for the person it was said (or written) about. 1. "He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary." Said by [?] of Hemingway. Orlok, 1 point 2. "It is better, I should think, to have him for a friend than an enemy, for he is a most formidable-looking personage. I listened to him as he conversed with the other gentlemen. All he says is most simple, but often cynical, harsh, and contradictory." Said by Charlotte Bronte of [?]. Poohbear, 1 point 3. "But my God, how beautiful [name] is, who else is as mysterious as he is; his language and method are like a brush trembling with excitement and ecstasy. But one must learn to read, just as one must learn to see and learn to live." 4. "The greatest of superficial novelists... It were, in our opinion, an offense against humanity to place [name] among the greatest novelists." 5. "[Name] is a fine-looking man, very impressive and very military in stance; you can tell he has a military background, even to the haircut. He knows I'm a flipped-out freak and still he helped me and my wife when we were in trouble. That is the best in humanity, there; that is who and what I love." 6. "She looked a little stout, vivacious lady, very plainly dressed, not much dignity or pretension about her." - Said by [?] of Queen Victoria. Bookpossum, 1 point 7. "[He] always had something of...riveting stupidity to say on any subject." Said by Gore Vidal of The Duke of Windsor (the former Edward VIII). Poohbear_nc, 2 points 8. "He is so amiable that I pronounce you will love him, if ever you become acquainted with him." 9. "Of all novelists in any country, [Trollope] best understands the role of money. Compared with him even Balzac is a romantic." Said by [?] of Trollope. Billi, 1 point 10. "No matter when this man might have left us, we would have felt that we had suffered an irreplaceable loss... may he have a lasting influence on the hearts and minds of men!" Belated Happy Birthday, btw. I just saw Roger (only just realised the connection...) mentioned your celebrations in the "What's in your cup" thread.

A few clues:
The subjects of 2-5 are best known as writers; 8 and 10 are politicians. These speakers are best known as writers: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9. One person is quoted twice, speaking of two different people. Speakers and subjects are all deceased. |
