Yes, people (who speak Japanese) can certainly read it either way. But for whatever it's worth, all the fiction books I've seen have been written top-to-bottom, right-to-left (tategaki).

You don't need to be a professional translator to see it. I've read japanese books in both greek and english translations. There are translators who just understand both languages, and translators who can write. Any translator should be able to write, but the need when you translate from a language such as japanese is all the greater. I know only a little japanese, but enough to recognize some sentence structures and ways of expression, and when I see the same structures in english or greek, where they make almost no sense, I know the translator may have translated the words, but certainly not the spirit.

Would you like to use Arabic? Sorry, that reads right to left. Japanese? Sorry, that's written vertically.

And the Kindle has less than complete support for Unicode (which is rather odd, because no other device based on the Mobipocket format has that problem). So if you want to display a language in anything other than Latin based characters (Western European languages, basically), you're out of luck.
Get a grip. So what you're saying is that because the Universe of languages can't be accommodated, none should? Maybe it's little steps at a time. Or maybe that's just the way it goes as a business decision. Now there is an opportunity for YOU to invent the "correct" eReader for the masses.

But the universe of languages can be and already are accommodated by the Epub format. And no matter how many "little steps" Amazon takes, Mobipocket will never be able to do it.

And if Amazon is going to take a "little step", then why not fix the Unicode problem first? Or, how about fixing font embedding first? Either one would make the Kindle significantly more useful. Instead, Amazon took the nonstep of expanding it to 2 more languages. Whoop-de-friggin'-do.

Does ePub support top-to-bottom, right-to-left writing systems?

If html supports it, then Epub supports it.

But I also saw it demonstrated at Digital Book 2009.

Does HTML support top-to-bottom writing? That's a genuine question - I haven't the faintest idea whether or not it does!

One of the current issues with ePub, of course, is that the standard specifies lots of things that no implementation actually supports. It'll probably be a while before we have ePub implementations which fully implement all the features of the standard.

Actually we've managed to get Japanese, Chinese, and Hebrew versions of my graphic novel VALENTINE on Kindle, as the characters are embedded in images. The Japanese and Hebrew versions are true right to left versions as well.

It can be done...

That's "just" a picture-book, not text based content and without reflow - it's an ebook with embedded images.

Doing it with images is cheating . It's a useful technique (I use it a lot, for such things as fragments of Greek) for restricted amounts of text, but you really can't use it for an entire book.
