You don't need to be a professional translator to see it. I've read japanese books in both greek and english translations. There are translators who just understand both languages, and translators who can write. Any translator should be able to write, but the need when you translate from a language such as japanese is all the greater. I know only a little japanese, but enough to recognize some sentence structures and ways of expression, and when I see the same structures in english or greek, where they make almost no sense, I know the translator may have translated the words, but certainly not the spirit.

And if Amazon is going to take a "little step", then why not fix the Unicode problem first? Or, how about fixing font embedding first? Either one would make the Kindle significantly more useful. Instead, Amazon took the nonstep of expanding it to 2 more languages. Whoop-de-friggin'-do. |

Does HTML support top-to-bottom writing? That's a genuine question - I haven't the faintest idea whether or not it does!
One of the current issues with ePub, of course, is that the standard specifies lots of things that no implementation actually supports. It'll probably be a while before we have ePub implementations which fully implement all the features of the standard. |

Actually we've managed to get Japanese, Chinese, and Hebrew versions of my graphic novel VALENTINE on Kindle, as the characters are embedded in images. The Japanese and Hebrew versions are true right to left versions as well.
It can be done... Last edited by alexdecampi; 01-15-2010 at 12:13 PM. Reason: oops, image was way too big - fixed! |

That's "just" a picture-book, not text based content and without reflow - it's an ebook with embedded images.

Doing it with images is cheating . It's a useful technique (I use it a lot, for such things as fragments of Greek) for restricted amounts of text, but you really can't use it for an entire book.
