Returning to a book

At the left side of the bar at the bottom of the NC is an open book icon that is supposed to take me back to the book I was reading, but it doesn't. I'm reading a book I loaded from ADE, is that why or is it due to my having rooted my NC?

I have found two things:
(1) if I sideload content (books, pdfs, etc.), the next time I turn on the NC, that sideloaded content seems to be in the "Keep Reading" as well as the recent reads section of the pull down menu.
(2) I always have to access in the sideloaded content in the same way (either from the library or from the recent read/keep reading area) in order for the default reading app to remember where I was, bookmarks, etc.
