And his later Three Men on the Bummel, about the same 3 blokes on a bicycle trip through Germany - but (from memory only) I think Montmorency stays at home this time.

For traveling in the actual American West in the 1860's, there is Mark Twain's Roughing It, Also some parts of 1850's steamboat travel on the Misissippi River in his Life on the Misissippi. Both Public Domain and recommended.
