What Happens to Page Numbers and Breaks With Conversion to EPUB

What happens with page numbering if you convert a Google Play pdf book or a Kindle awz, awz3 or mobi file that has page numbering to epub or any other format.

If you wanted to use information from one of the converted books as a reference in a footnote or end note what location or page number would you be able to identify the location or page number in a converted file.

Thanks for any ideas on these related questions.

The main question here is what happens to page numbers or locations when a file is converted to epub or to a new format?
