Replacing format of file already in Calibre

I downloaded a bunch of O'Reilly books after they announced that they had updated most of the ePub editions, and now I want to replace the editions that are in Calibre. Does it ignore the new edition entirely if I select No when it asks me if I want to add the duplicates? I added all of the duplicates, and now I'm merging the two editions, but I'd like to know if there's an easier way to do this.

The only somewhat easier way I could think of is first (bulk) deleting the epub form the books you want to update, then add the new files with automerge enabled. That should, theoretically, merge them into the existing entries.

It might be easier to call up the Edit Metadata dialog individually for the books to be updated and use drag-and-drop to the formats area of that dialog.

There has been some discussion recently about the way the Duplicate detection works and there definitely seems to be a desire for a mode where the duplicate format overwrites the original rather than being ignored as is currently the case.

Pick this one

With this method, ALL your tags and meta-data stay intact, only the book (single format) changes.
If you have converted to other formats, this is a good place to remove version obsolete?formats.

For the record Manichean's method above preserves all of the tags and meta-data too. He just does it in bulk. Both itimpi's method and Manichean's method gets the OP to where he wants to be.

Bottom line is the original poster should use the method they are the most comfortable with.

My bad. I was thinkin Bulk deleying as in Wipeing out the records. I forgot about the "Delet formats" tick box on the bulk meta-edit screen.
