Random House's new library pricing increase revealed

A while back Random House announced that they would continue to offer library ebooks, but that they would be increasing prices. It looks like those increases have started to hit and they're as high as 300%...

Quote:
On Wednesday, Oberhausen bought Eisenhower in War and Peace by Jean Edward Smith for $40 via OverDrive. On Thursday, the price was $120. The print version of the book, with the library’s discount, is a little over $20 (it retails at $40). For Blessings by Anna Quindlen the ebook price went from $15 to $45.
Quote:
Titles available in print as new hardcovers: $65- $85
Titles available for several months, or generally timed to paperback release: $25-$50
New children’s titles available in print as hardcovers: $35-$85
Older children’s titles and children’s paperbacks: $25-$45

The government does not need to step in and regulate ebook prices.

Libraries should boycott Random House - print, audio, and ebooks.

Why not? We have FRAND for patents, why not make something for the other types of IP?

What is next? If they are regulating ebook prices, why not ebook readers? Where does it stop? The government should not be in the practice of regulating prices.

All that's really needed is drastic copyright reform and overhaul or repeal of the DMCA. Unfortunately, that will not happen anytime soon.

As a metter of fact that is true. It is equally true that the government needs to get out of franchising monopolies on stories and information altogether.

On a more serious note, our little non government funded town library is looking into "lender readers" older donated readers we can lend to those who can't afford readers. Loaded with public domain and promotional books. Obviousely if we do this it lacks the convenience of downloads, but on the other hand, there is a lot of stuff out there and our space is very limited. We may not have much from the major publishers on this path, but we might introduce people to authors just as good which will be more in their budgets when they can make purchases.

Rant on

Why does the Government need to be involved in the pricing of anything...?!?

Why can't the market decide prices and they will adjust accordingly based on demand. No one is forcing anyone at gun point to buy anything...including 120 dollar e-books. Why are people so afraid to voice their opinions with their wallets, would they rather have the Brown Shirts telling them what to do and how to do it?

If you sold a product that the public felt was too expensive, would YOU want the Government stepping into your private business and telling you the price you can sell it for...? I for one am tired of Government sticking their noses in places they have no business.

Maybe the Government should tell use what to drive, where we can live, what we can eat, where we work, and how we communicate.

They can't even balance the budget, that alone makes them too incompetent to even hold a third grade bake sale...

Don't like 120 dollar e-books...then don't buy them! How much more simple does it have to be!?! But keep the Government the hell out of it!

Rant off

If libraries boycott Random House, what books are they going to acquire for their ebook collections??? Isn't Random House the last of the majors to even SELL to libraries? Selling at inflated prices is vastly better than not selling to libraries at all. Is it better than a 26-checkout limit on the license? I dunno. Discuss.

And someone tell me if I'm reading this right:

The article says that Overdrive doesn't disclose their markup on books. BUT we can crunch our own numbers from the article:

- Eisenhower in War and Peace: library price $140. This is a new HC so RC's wholesale pricing was $65 to $85. Let's assume the high end ($85), and Overdrive is making $75 on this title, or roughly 60% markup (is my math right?)

- Blessings: library price $45. Wholesale price $25 to $50. Too broad a range to know what the markup is.

- 10 Easter Egg Hunters: library price $26.97. Wholesale price $25 to $45. Doesn't compute!
