Thank you, Nightbird. Apparently I've already expressed a good deal of gratitude through Karma because I'm unable to hand you anymore.

After a lifetime of reading everything by Raymond Chandler, Agatha Christie, James Lee Burke, Tony Hillerman, Michael Connelly, Robert Crais, Sue Grafton, Dashiell Hammett, P.D. James, A. Conan Doyle, Richard S. Prather (my first early love), etc., etc. etc., I now can't get enough of the best mystery writers beyond the U.S and England.

It's wonderful to still have so much to discover.

Two more $.99 everywhere (links inside).

Trick or Treat: A Corinna Chapman Mystery #4 by Kerry Greenwood.

Quote:
Description
When a cut-price franchise bakery opens its doors just down the street from Earthly Delights and crowds flock to purchase the bread, baker Corinna Chapman is under-standably nervous. Meanwhile, her lover Daniel’s old friend Georgiana Hope has temporarily set up residence in his house. She’s tall, blond, and gorgeous, and it doesn’t take Corinna long to work out that she’s up to something. Daniel is making excuses and Corinna is worried about his absences. But even more worrisome is the strange outbreak of madness that seems to be centered on Lonsdale Street.
Can Corinna find her way through a maze of health regulations, missing boyfriends, sinister strangers, fraudulent companies and back-alley ambushes? Or will the Earthly Delights Bakery be well and truly done?
Fatal Undertaking: A Buryin’ Barry Mystery #5 by Mark de Castrique.

Quote:
Description
Funeral director and part-time sheriff Barry Clayton finds United States Junior Chamber (Jaycee) member Archie Donovan’s request absurd until he learns the casket will be the centerpiece of the Jaycees’ haunted house, a charity event with all proceeds going to the children’s hospital. But when the president of the Jaycees is murdered in the casket on Halloween, the national press descends upon Gainesboro to cover the bizarre crime. Sheriff Tommy Lee Wadkins assigns Barry to be the lead investigator of a case that presents no motive and no suspects. Then someone fires a shot at Archie Donovan, and Barry wonders whether the victim in the casket had even been the intended target. Barry finds his police work and personal life on a collision course as his ex-wife Rachel comes to town with high hopes of using the story to launch her TV network career. She begins prying into the lives of Gainesboro’s most distinguished citizens and creates a backlash that leaves another body in its wake. Old wounds are ripped open, family rifts exposed, and a criminal enterprise revealed that cuts to the heart of the community. Barry Clayton must follow a trail of clues as winding as a forest path. The unexpected destination: a mountainside of Christmas trees. Somewhere behind these symbols of peace and goodwill lurks a killer. Unmasking him will be a fatal undertaking.

Count me in as a Garry Disher fan, though more for his Hal Challis series. They've just started making the Wyatt books available here in the US; read two so far and IMO they're much harsher, more thriller-ish than the Hal Challis books.

Anyway...I'm posting, melmac, 'cause I discovered a new (to me) Australian press yesterday that features several classic crime titles: Wakefield Press. Looks pretty interesting - of course, per usual, not all titles available everywhere, but I did pick up this one for kindle, which won the first-ever Edgar:

Beat Not the Bones by Charlotte Jay

In this novel, a naive young girl travels to Papua New Guinea from Australia, determined to discover the truth about her late husband's death: Was it suicide or murder? The story fleshes out its characters: a sheltered girl on the verge of womanhood, father figures with unfatherly intentions, and men and women on the brink of nervous breakdowns. Geraldine Halls, writing here as Jay, has fused these elements into a suspenseful tale of terror. A world-traveling native of Australia, she spent several years working in Papua New Guinea, an experience that enabled her to landscape her story with an authentic tropical background and to create convincing anticolonial literature through her sensitive characterization of both the white administration and the native population.

FrostLine:A Ben Abbott Mystery #3 by Justin Scott free at Apple, $.99 elsewhere.

Quote:
Description
HardScape and StoneDust, the first Ben Abbott novels, established Ben as one of the most engaging and canny investigators to have appeared in a long time. Britain’s Literary Review terms the Abbotts “Smooth, sardonic, impeccably argued, immaculately written” while author Lawrence Block says: “Frostline is the best book in a series that started strong and keeps getting better.” When Newbury’s newest resident, ex-diplomat Harry King, the close confidant of Kissinger and reputed to have been heavily involved in the Vietnam War, summons real estate agent Ben Abbott to his new McMansion, Ben dreams of big dollar signs. The commission from selling the Fox Trot estate would be huge. But King doesn’t want Ben’s selling expertise, he wants him to act as a mediator between him and his troublesome neighbour, surly Vietnam vet Ronnie Butler. A strip of Butler’s land cuts straight into King’s estate like a knife, acting as a red flag for two neighbors who are as ornery and quarrelsome as a pair of rival bulls. In fact, the testosterone is flowing heavier than the waters in the stream King is damming up for a picturesque lake. Before Ben can mediate, an explosion rocks a lavish party on the Fox Trot lawn. The blast blows up the dam—and Butler’s ex-con son, Dickie, along with it. Butler, an army-trained sapper, is arrested for setting the dynamite. Ben, whose childhood friend Dickie had tried his patience and loyalty many times before, refuses to accept Butler’s guilt. Besides, too many things don’t add up. Could it be the work of terrorists? Of one of the many groups holding a grudge against King? Or just someone with his own axe to grind? With the Feds on the scene, caught in state and local law enforcement jockeying, Ben negotiates an unpopular course through the usual minefield of his various loyalties to friends, family and lovers, of whom there are plenty….

Deal to Die for: A John Deal Mystery #3 by Les Standiford free at Apple, $.99 elsewhere.

Quote:
Description
This suspenseful third John Deal crime thriller from Standiford finds the Miami building contractor tangling with Chinese gangsters who are trying to move in on a scheme hatched by two Hollywood porno magnates to create X-rated films for the huge mainland Chinese market. Deal already has troubles enough?his wife, Janice, has sunk into a deep depression over the serious burns she suffered in last year’s Raw Deal, and a close friend has apparently committed suicide, shortly after she has told her film-star sister, Paige Nobleman, that Paige was adopted. Deal and his tenant/pal, ex-cop Vernon Driscoll, begin investigating Paige’s birth and, eventually, the friend’s death, following leads that take them directly into the porno scheme and the path of some deadly Chinese gang members.
