Yup, I agree 100%, with #2 and 4 being the most annoying issues for me both as a reader and an eBook publisher.

Yep. I agree. The launch was definitely rushed. And I don't think it was a coincidence that the release date just happens to be 1 day before Barnes and Noble unveils their LCD E Ink hybrid ebook reader.

Just to add one more thing. I thought Sony's recent release of their two new readers was even more rushed. When they proclaimed their new devices for sale, none of their supplies even had them in stock yet. In fact, Sony's own website didn't have them in stock for several days after they said the devices were available.

Everyone's trying to get out of the gate the the soonest.

I don't think #1 is a very valid reason, they will have got a lot more attention than if they had launched it at the show.

That's because the 300 and 600 were leaked. Sony responded to that.

This way though they got to be the ONLY ereader being talked about, several companies were shilling devices at Frankfurt and the big news was Mandela's Archives not ereaders!

But that's the point. It was just a publicity stunt (which caused quite some initial feedback, that's for sure), but nothing more.

No sophisticated concept, no extended/expanded architecture for an international community. Which has been critized in the days that followed. If Amazon doesn't meet readers' demands in non-English eBooks on their domestic websites (not all people are that good in English) in the foreseeable future, this stunt might cause a backlash.

Many company's announce or launch a product before it is generally available. It is nothing new. It doesn't mean anything was rushed.

The writer really doesn't understand simple business strategy. Points 1 and 3 are obviously intentional. Point 1 was to create a big buzz before the exhibition and thus steal the thunder from any newly announced product or service. Point 3 means they want to sell more readers and not just books. They want to sell both. Another problem with the iphone is the wireless delivery.

He is right about items 2 and 4. But the overriding concern for Amazon was to get going before a slew of new devices and services hit the market.

I think amazon had to do it because Sony announced its fugly Daily Edition and amazon wanted to capture customers' attention before it was too late.

I don't know either way, but the way the intern'l Kindle was announced does raise possibilities. Amazon had a press event for all the other Kindle launches. When the new Kindle was announced, all they did was send out a press release (around midnight eastern US).

Number 2: no country specific sites. Well given that http://www.amazon.com.au/ doesn't even exist that's not a suprise. Amazon is a company that hasn't fully capitalised on their namebrand. People know about Amazon around the world and would love to buy from them, but they are heavily US based and it is painful for overseas buyers. So that means exchange rates come into play more frequently, as do long shipping rates for overseas buyers. Apple and Ebay both cashed in on foreign markets, Amazon should too (in a better way). Who knows why they haven't, it doesn't make sense imo.

Extra reason: they have intelligence on the Apple tablet (lol), so want to get overseas consumers invested in Kindles before they lose the ENTIRE global market to Apple. That means rushing it out the door with all of the shoddy things attached to it.

It may have been rushed, but it is a pretty solid presence now. I just went to the Sony Store over the weekend, and their e-books have a very prominent display in the middle of the store where you can play with them.

With the 505, you had to actually look for it behind the counter and ask a sales guy to get it out.
