I am afraid the Apple chargers are insanely expensive, so people not having an Apple and looking for an alternate (to Sony!!!) charger will not look at Apple products in the first place. Maybe they'll look at Sony chargers, for instance those for cameras or smartwatches or smartphones or other micro-USB (charging-enabled) appliances. This is what a normal consumer will do - check with the manufacturer. Sony is also expensive.
Whether an Apple charger will work or not is per se however a good info. Another good info is that ANY charger delivering 5V to 500-1000mA (not more) will charge any micro-USB gear (that supports charging via USB) if the cable is "prepared", by connecting both data lines via a resistor not greater than 200 ohm. A simple short will suffice. That's the big deal. [Image violates Posting Guidelines for size - MODERATOR] Now, a few manufacturers use some tricks to let the charger go beyond the standard 500mA current. But this is not an issue with "older" generation devices. Last edited by Dr. Drib; 02-28-2016 at 02:15 PM. |

There are a lot of 3rd party USB chargers that follow the Apple way. And because of that, those charger are not Sony compatible.

The Apple chargers of the new generation use a differential voltage of the data lines if they want to provide 1000mA instead of 500mA.
This is accomplished via internal resistors or resistor arrays. Shorting the data lines in the bigger plug (USB type A) with a conductive foil of any origin (I think now of cigarettes package seal foil ) will make any stubborn, shrew Apple charger to charge any Android or any other gear that observes the USB-charging guidelines. But as I said, the first charger one would look for is not the Apple but the Sony. If this is expensive, then a generic one will be probably the next target. Why paying 50€ when the next corner shop sells them for 3€, cable included? |
