Anyway, I do now see 'Add to Shelf' *huzzah* but no 'Similar' -- my guess is that is because none of my books are kepubs and therefore expected behavior. I'm guessing the 'd' in my serial number is because I used the desktop to DL the update vs wireless sync and its the same firmware. |

I did manual update from one of the blighted and slow page turning earlier version 2 firmwares to 2.1.4 but after the installation the reader froze on the smiley face load screen for about an hour and would not turn off. i inserted a pin into the reset and holding down the home button got the system to factory restore. I then installed 2.1.4 again. This time it installed and turned on but the problem now is that after loading a book the reader will often restart instead of turn page. Please advise. I have had so many problems with this device from firmware 2 that i would not be able to recommend this machine to anyone until this nonsense is sorted.

I can confirm the same thing happens on my Touch when reading sideloaded epubs on my SD card after the 2.1.4 firmware update.

The sign-out function works as intended so it's not bugged. I have suggested before that they should change the name on it because you are not the first person that has encountered this behaviour and been confused. It's function near as I can tell it to rebuild the books database without having to do a full factory reset. For people on Kobo Touch this means they don't need a hardwire connection to reset their database (they can do that over Wifi rather a full factory reset requiring a computer for setup). |

This may be the beginning of Kobo forking their firmware versions. What country did you buy your Touch in? |

Quick head's up. I updated my UK KT to 2.1.4, and ended up with a bricked Kobo on my hands. Just gone through the disco ball of rebirth (recovery reset) and restoring back to roughtly where I was, but I'll wait until 2.1.4 lands on my device now.

I am still at firmware 2.0.0c and still cannot get a more recent firmware.
Bought it in France (fnac) but I am using a Kobo account. Any idea when 2.1.4 will be available worldwide ? |

Its direct from Kobo support in Toronto as a replacement for one that locked up but it was shipped to the USA so... your guess is as good as mine |

Nothing for me here in Canada either. Kobo really seems to be bungling this firmware roll-out. Not sure what's going on this time. It would be nice if they would just explain to us why there is a delay this time.

They don't appear to be bungling the firmware rollout. They're taking their time. They've already disclosed that they're releasing device specific firmwares, targeting regions and specific hardware revisions. At a guess, I would say this is because they're now dealing with per-device optimisation, rather than attempting to bundle a single firmware to run on all devices.
Yes, they'll have an internal roadmap. No, they're not disclosing it. They wont disclose it because if something happens to interrupt that roadmap, be it a technical glitch or something which sends them back to the drawing board, there will be pages of complaints that the 2.1.14 firmware is two hours late. I'm with the devs on this one. 2.1.14 will be rolled out, it is being rolled out. It'll arrive in the next week or so, and initial reports are promising. Give the developers/product-managers some space. |

That was announced as happening going forward - not this current rollout.

I think it's about time for Kobo to consider freezing the firmware on the original KT, except perhaps for critical updates. It's been out for 16 months now, and it's been through a dozen firmware updates. The first few added major improvements, but recently they've been fiddling pointlessly with the UI, creating as many new bugs as solving old bugs, adding more intrusive advertising, and adding support for newer models that doesn't matter to owners of older devices. For me the KT is perfectly usable as it is, and I'm sure it will remain one of my most-used and most-appreciated devices for some time to come. There are certainly problems remaining, but if the developers haven't managed to fix it by now, there's little likelihood they ever will.
Personally, I'll try 2.1.4 when it rolls out (since I'm currently stuck with the buggy 2.0.0 release), but I may end up going back to 1.9.17 if I don't like it. And that will be it for me. |
