delay on connect

I have about 350 books on my Reader, all RTF, all on an SD card, all transfered using the CONNECT software. I have the same set of book on my PC loaded into CONNECT.

When I connect the Reader to the PC, CONNECT goes through some lengthly, intensive process that basically makes my machine unusable for about 5 minutes. What is it doing??? I'd understand if it was autosyncing like an iPod, but obviously it's not. Is it repaginating everything on the card, even though the Reader already has all that information?

I finally just gave up on the CONNECT software, and starting copying files directly to the SD card. There's a minute or so delay the first time I open a book on the Reader (or change to a magnification level for the first time), but it's still preferrable to the app. Of course, I can't purchase Sony books, but I didn't plan to.

Now if the Reader would just respect the file structure on the card...
