Free book (nook/Sony) - The Brand Within [Business Self-Help] + Sony freebie round-up

The Brand Within: The Power of Branding from Birth to the Boardroom, by Daymond John with Dan Paisner, is a business self-improvement book by some guy who apparently owns a trendy clothing line and is also on the US equivalent of Dragons' Den, that reality show where entrepreneurs pitch to investors, for which the Canadian version is pretty fun to watch.

This is offered free at B&N and also at Sony (available for Canadians at the latter), courtesy of publisher Greenleaf Book Group, LLC, who somewhat to my surprise, are not a glorified self-pub. I was kind of expecting this to be one of those vanity advice books that people put up on Smashwords which often clutter the Inkmesh freebie listings.

Anyway, if you like business or celebrity, or especially celebrity business, enjoy!

Synopsis
The Brand Within is a book for the business leader and for the consumer who likes to be out in front of the latest trend. It's a book for young adults, looking to build and sustain the personal and professional relationships they'll draw on for the rest of their lives. It sends the message that branding is a two-way street.

THE BRAND WITHIN by Daymond John is the second nonfiction book in the best-selling "Display of Power" series. THE BRAND WITHIN examines the loyalty of relationships companies seek to establish by attaching celebrities to their brands and the instantaneous impulses consumers exhibit when purchasing a product. Drawing on his cutting edge experiences in the fashion business, as well as his hard-won insights developed as a sought-after marketing consultant to trendsetters and tastemakers, the author argues that branding relationships have now seeped into every aspect of our lives.

For more free B&N books, over at their discussion boards members have set up an excellent Free NOOKbooks Summary thread which gets pruned and updated every couple of days to keep it current.

Sony, on the other hand, has no such nicety available, so maybe I'll do a round-up of the currently available freebies once I've gotten something to eat.

PRUNING COMPLETE: this is most of the stuff that's newly free, and everything (minus some of the author/publisher-direct deals which I'll figure out how to put back later and you can access by scrolling down the thread anyway) still amazingly free from the previous version of the time-limited promotional list.

Unless otherwise stated, all titles should be available to Canadians (except @ Borders & Sourcebooks, which sell to US only). I make no guarantees for any other regions.

For that reason, if you see a Borders listing but not a Kobo one and you are in the US, try Kobo anyway. They hide unavailable stuff that's geo-restricted.

NB regarding Borders: their website often spits up error messages when you try to Add to Library free books. Search and add from within their Desktop app, and if a search listing still says $X.XX, click to view the product page. Sometimes a freebie gives a price during search, but becomes free when looked at directly. It may be best to have no credit card/payment info when doing this, because Borders has been known to charge for free books via the Desktop app due to some glitch.

For convenience, promo short stories have been moved to the bottom, and Romance and Christian Fiction have been given subcategories because they're just so huge and people often have their favourite subgenres to zoom in upon.

All categories are my best guess based upon the blurbs, product page info, and what else the author seems to write, so if something looks promising but is in a genre you don't care for, try picking it up anyway. You might be pleasantly surprised.

People who like general historical & contemporary women's fiction should probably check the romance listings and vice versa, since those tend to be pretty ambiguous and are most likely to be misfiled.

Sandman Slim, 1st in a series by Richard Kadrey, said to be "acclaimed". Urban fantasy thriller (this is apparently very gritty and may necessitate a language warning for more sensitive readers). Amazingly still free at Sony (for non-Canadians) long after it's expired at the other stores. Grab it while you still can!

Life sucks, then you die. Period.

Unless you're James Stark, a hitman in Hell for eleven years before escaping back up to Hell-on-earth L.A.--looking for revenge, absolution . . . love, maybe.

But Hell's not through with Stark.Heaven's not either.

Darn, shows up free at your link but not in the store software.
Looks good, though. Might buy this one.

Sigh. The Sony software has that problem sometimes. A book looks like $0 when you browse the store, but then you find out it's $XX when you put it in your cart and try to checkout your freebie find.

I'll edit so that hopefully no one else gets disappointed.

Oh, and Sandman Slim has been getting high praise over in MR's What Are You Reading thread in the Recs forum.

Night Shade Books offers as a promo freebie Richard Kadrey's earlier unrelated novel Butcher Bird on their downloads page, in case anyone wants to try his writing before they buy.

MultiFormat and DRM-free, and you can get more of Night Shade's books similarly via Baen's Webscriptions.

Hey, not your fault. You're just sharing what you find and I appreciate it.

I went ahead and purchased Sandman anyway and I'm looking forward to reading it!

The $0 version can be seen on the web site and in the software. You just can't actually buy it (get a msg that it is currently unavailable). Searching by author or name just finds the full-pay version. Looks like the source has been removed from the current catalog, but they forgot to kill the web page for it.

I'll continue to edit the round-up to remove any that people mention have expired and add in any older book that turns out to still be free if I stumble across it.

But what I normally do when I manage to come across a new Sony freebie that hasn't shown up on MR yet is to post that book in a new thread, and add a round-up of all the still-available ones I can find after giving the details of the new book.

This helps keep things current, so people get alerted about a new book that may also turn up in a non-Sony store in the usual way free books get announced on this forum.

Even though I've only got a Kindle, I do try to help Sony users take advantage of the freebies they can still get that Sony just doesn't bother to tell them about and they might miss because a lot of free books get posted in Kindle or Nook-labeled threads first and there just aren't dedicated blogs or forums for listing Sony freebies like there are for Kindle and Nook or even a decent website list like Kobo has.

While people around here are very helpful in bumping them up with alerts if/when they show up at Sony, it still takes a special request to a mod to get the thread title changed to update which stores it's in and sometimes people forget.

Seriously, the Reader Store "Free Books" widget in their Bargains section has like, maybe 2 current promo freebies, and pads it out with a bunch of self-published stuff, while there's plenty of deliberate publisher giveaways that they could put up to enhance their store and show that Sony users can benefit from these special deals, too!

If a bunch of new Sony-compatible books turn up as addenda to other freebie threads, I think I'll edit links for them into the round-up and make a add a short post to let interested people know that it's been updated, like I've been doing for B&N's current Free Fridays holiday classic book-of-the-week thing.

Hope this helps.

If a more permanent thread is wanted, perhaps one such as in the Kindle forum might work - a sticky in the sony forum. There is also one in the nook forum, but not as well read or updated.

I think a dedicated Sony sticky thread would run into the same issues as the current Nook one does, in which a lot of the deals are long-since-expired by the time someone opens up the thread.

People would pretty much have to work backwards from the latest post, and hope that other people had consistently remembered to post the new books that had popped up in-between times. And you'd keep getting complaints about stuff that had expired from disappointed people.

The Kindle forum sticky works very well because you've taken the time to refresh it with a new one each month, and it's made easier by the fact that places like eReaderIQ have their automatically maintained still-free list, and that it's also very easy to search for just the non-public domain/less-likely-to-be-self-pub stuff at Amazon directly.

Personally, I think the NOOKbook summary thread over at B&N's forums works beautifully, with both people posting their individual "finds" as they come in, and one guy who takes the time to check and prune and update the entire list every couple of days so it keeps current with what's actually available. The only way it could possibly be improved upon would be if he also edited the first post with the updated list at the same time. And if the B&N people would actually go and update their official Free eBooks page with the info.

But myself, I wouldn't want to do the amount of work he's put into it, though I'm certainly grateful he's chosen to do so. I'm willing to do a Sony round-up every once in a while because it's only every other week or so that I come across a new one and I can just quickly check back through my most recent set of acquisitions in the Reader Library to see how far I get until I hit a non-freebie, which is generally after less than a dozen books. It takes little enough time that I can just do it over a quick meal in front of the computer.

And if I'm this unmotivated, I'm not sure anyone else currently on MR would be any more inclined to step in, especially given how most of the usual freebie finding tools/tricks just don't work for the Sony store.

Ah well, the people who're actually interested in supplying steady freebie information probably already have built their own freebie listing sites with blackjack! and hookers! affiliate links.

But they bring in so much revenue! And visitors love them, too! Or at least, experience "negotiable affection" which is close enough for jazz.

And speaking of revenue, the free financial advice booklet (44 pages in the Reader Library software), Money Girl's Smart Moves to Deal With Your Debt has now shown up at Sony (but not available for Canadians).

I've also edited in a couple of erotic romance novellas that I suspect have permafreebie status, and there are some still some promo short stories out there that people may be interested in which I may add later when I get back from running errands.

In the meantime, if you're interested in SF/Fantasy, do a search in the Sony store for "Star Wars: Lost Tribe of the Sith" or "John Jackson Miller" to turn up his freebie novella series (5 parts so far, some parts not available to Canadians, illustrating the annoyance of pointless geo-restrictions - be consistent about it, darn you!).

7 9 recent new freebies that are also showing up for Sony now. Links are in the round-up post above, a quick summary below:

Mystery/Suspense/Thriller

Watchlist, some sort of collaborative thriller with contributions by well-known authors like Lee Child and Jeffrey Deaver.

Romance

Heart of the Wolf, a werewolf PNR by Terry Spear.

The Fire Lord's Lover, an elf/human fantasy PNR by Kathryne Kennedy.

Merlin's Harp, an Arthurian historical PNR by Anne Eliot Crompton.

Plus 2 new current Sony exclusives which have their own announcement threads:

An Unfair Lady, Victorian historical romance by Kathryne Kennedy.

The Heir, Regency historical romance by Grace Burrowes.

All five courtesy of Sourcebooks.

Christian Fiction

Jackson Jones: The Tale of a Boy, an Elf, and a Very Stinky Fish, pre-teen by Jennifer Kelly. Not available to Canadians.

Last Light, 1st in a 4-part thriller series by Terri Blackstock.

A Gift of Grace, 1st in Kauffman Amish Bakery family drama series by Amy Clipston. A repeat freebie, this comes with recipes.

Those last two are available free to Canadians in the Sony store, whereas they are full price in the Kindle store even though they are free for other locations there.

5 more Sony/Kobo/ADE-compatible time-limited freebies have shown up, at the Borders, Kobo, and Carina Press stores, respectively.

It can be tricky to get stuff from Borders, which is also US-only, so I'm linking to the original announcement threads which sometimes contain helpful tips once you scroll down to the ultimate download link.

Basically, the best way to do it is to click on each individual book product page for the "Add to Library" button, instead of any aggregate listing page (tends to give you an error message).

And if that doesn't work, then load up the Borders Desktop app and search for the books via author/title in the store and click Download Now for the free books (DO NOT CLICK if the "free" book has a price on it in the app; try again via the website after logging out, restarting your browser, and logging back in).

After a short delay (maybe a day or so), you'll see a "Download ePub" link in the "My eBooks Library" on the website which you can then get via Adobe Digital Editions.

Dancing in the Lowcountry, southern general/literary fiction by James Villas. Repeat freebie which was previously offered for Sony. Now at Borders and Kobo (free for Canadians there).

Vengeance Road, thriller by Adam Mofina. Borders.

Too Good to Be True, contemporary romance by Kristan Higgins. Borders.

Twas the Night, holiday chick-lit or romantic comedy linked short story set by Sandra Hill, Kate Holmes, and Trish Jensen. Borders.

Also, a freebie that's been on the Borders list for a long time, which they've apparently forgotten to take off:

Colters' Woman, erotic contemporary romance novel (full-length) featuring a familial ménage (f/m/m/m, I believe) by Maya Banks. Set in the same series as the equally free novella Colters' Wife, which I may or may not have linked in the post above, which is permafreebie at Kobo and B&N (a Samhain book, so it's DRM-free at the latter).

Over at Carina Press, there's a time-limited holiday coupon giveaway of a pre-order romance story, available in DRM-free ePub and PDF formats. MR member bookratt's post has all the details.

Like Clockwork, sf steampunk romance by Bonnie Dee.

Finally, if you enjoyed those Sourcebook romance freebies from the earlier update, it turns out that as part of the promo push they've discounted some of those authors' other books to $2.99 in many of the stores.

So if you want to pick up the sequels cheap, now would be a good time to buy (and also show the publisher that a freebie giveaway is a great way to promote sales).

5 more books from various Christian publishers have now shown up for Sony.

Divanomics: How to Still be Fabulous When You're Broke, inspirational financial self-help by Michelle McKinney Hammond

Conspiracy in Kiev, FBI-agent-goes-international-and-out-of-her-jurisdiction thriller by Noel Hynd

Unwrapping Christmas, heartwarming holiday-themed general/literary/women's fiction by Lori Copeland

Jed and Roy McCoy, A Christmas Story, children's book by Andrew McDonough. Not available to Canadians.

Natalie Wants a Puppy, book 6 in a children's series by Dandi Daley Mackall, who is said to be the author of over 400 books.

If anyone happens to spot anything in the main round-up that's expired (there should be a slew by now, given how these are all time-limited promos, though the OP book looks like it's edging onto permafreebie status because they normally don't last this long), please let me know and I'll edit it out.
