How long? Let's just say I fully expect a robot butler and a flying car by then.

..."But, the HP TC1000 is a good, workhorse type tablet PC that allows reading in portrait or landscape, runs Windows XP, and can read all the formats the poster has mentioned. It is frequently available on eBay for less than $250, has a nice color screen, and the stylus is a very comfortable size for writing and highlighting.

I highly recommend it as a larger form factor ebook reader."...

Perhaps this is the better option. I will certainly find out. And, by "no proprietary formats", I meant that I'll not be forced to use a specific document type, or forced into buying products from a monopolistic source. Things like the IPod and its music, for example. I obviously was unclear on that.

Anyway, it seems, from the answers here, reading other forum posts in the meantime, and general research, that I might be better off with a tablet pc, of which I know little.

In any event, it appears I've wasted the time of responders, and apologize. From what I"ve been able to learn in the last few days, it doesn't appear that I'll be buying an EReader any time soon.

Thanks anyway, folks, and those who said I didn't know what I wanted were correct. But now, I realize I DON'T want any of the present EReaders out there. They will not meet mine requirements.

So, thanks anyway; doesn't appear I'll bother you again.

Itdincor, thanks for telling us about your decision. It's good that you have your mind clearer about what you want now. And the other posters just couldn't resist a light-hearted bit of banter/speculation/pedantry.
Whatever you eventually choose, drop in and look our book upload section, the news section, or our Deals and freebies section. There are a fair number of people here who don't actually have specialist devices but find some useful material.

None of the current readers "force" you to use a specific format. All of them support open formats.
Sony Reader: TXT, PDF, RTF, EPUB
Kindle: TXT (others with conversion into Mobi)
Jinke Hanlin: TXT, PDF, RTF, HTML, FB2
Cybook Gen3: PDF, TXT, HTML
iRex iLiad: TXT, PDF, RTF, HTML

Actually, even iPods will happily play MP3s and unencrypted AAC files.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but PDF is just as "proprietory" a format as, say, MobiPocket or BBeB, isn't it? The format specification is "owned" by Adobe.

The PDF specification is open and you don't need license to read or create PDFs. And it seems the "ownership" has been transferred to ISO recently.

The specification of the format published recently (1 Jule 2008); it became open recently. That doesn't mean a lot, it still remains a fixed-layout format that while might be suitable for paper it isn't for electronic machines.

True, but it is no longer proprietary.

Thanks Dale - that's what I was asking; whether or not the specification was still owned by Adobe. "Openness" to tools, etc, has nothing to be with being "proprietory"; many proprietory formats (eg Mobi) have excellent free tools available for creating them. Given a choice between the "open" PDF format and the "proprietory" MobiPocket format for eBooks, MobiPocket is clearly (IMHO) a better choice.

I am a eBook user (grey color) - for more than 7 years and Table PC user - for more than 4 years. It is impossible to have everything IN but at a lower price.....if there is any...tell me...

My hanlin ebook is about USD 350 (in total including freight) and Tablet PC (USD 3000 with some upgrading)...they play different roles. Use computer to work and earn to buy ebook to enjoy life.....shall we not mix-up?
