Both Feet in Hell by Alan David

1944, France and nine British soldiers are fighting in the newly formed One Section Battalion under the unpopular, but brilliantly effective, Sergeant Baggott.

Their aim is to re-capture a French town, with the hope that they will be home in time to enjoy a white Christmas with their loved ones.

Alan David is a pseudonym of Donald S Rowland, a prolific writer of over 500 novels in various genres. His other titles include `Stalingrad Heroes', `Heroes without Honour', `Heroes in Normandy', `The Battle Done' and `Heroes at Cassino'.

Swords of Arabia: Betrayal by Anthony Litton

The year is 1915.
Fouad, the warlord who has led Narash boldly for many years, is dead.
His heir, Talal, is only a young boy; unable to command the respect and devout obedience which his father once did.

Since he is a child, the majlis demands that there be a regency: one shared between an ally to the Talal faction, Nasir, and a member of a different faction, Badr.
Knowing that this arrangement leaves her son's position far from secure, Zahirah must use every ounce of her Machiavellian expertise to ensure that her and her family survive the enemies within.
And as Narash finds itself caught in the crossfire of British and Turkish conflict, and forever at the mercy of its historic enemy ibn Saud, will Zahirah be able to rely on those around her against the external foe?

Sequel to Not Free Swords of Arabia: Warlord

A Spanish Affair by John Masters

Originally published as 'Fandango Rock'.

Spain has been plunged into a brutal Civil War.
César de Aguirre, an enigmatic bullfighter, known in the ring as El Rondeño de Aragon, is a proud Spanish nationalist.
So his feelings are conflicted when he meets the headstrong and attractive American, Kit Fremantle.
He stands for the very soul of his country, she for the free heart of America.
Kit is staying with her father, who is tasked with improving the increasingly tense relationship between the Americans and the Spanish locals.

Lieutenant Colonel John Masters, DSO (1914-1983) was an English officer in the Indian Army who fought in World War Two, and later a novelist. His works are noted for their descriptions of the British Empire in India. They include `Thunder at Sunset', `Man of War', and `Far, Far, the Mountain Peak'. [and of course Bhowani Junction].

Rome For Sale by Jack Lindsay

In the First Century BC a plebeian class, grown rich from the commercial exploitation of Rome's rapidly growing empire, now rules the state as a ruthless financial oligarchy.

The Cataline Conspiracy is beginning and prominent political figures are readying themselves to fight for possession of Rome...

Jack Lindsay (1900-90) was the son of a well-known Australian artist, Norman Lindsay. He took first class honours in Latin and Greek at Queensland University, and came to England in 1926 - his books include `The Normans and Their World', `Leisure and pleasure in Roman Egypt', `Last days with Cleopatra' and `The Ancient World'.

Bargain @ $1.99-$2.99 from Open Road Media (couponable @ Kobo, price should be the same in all the usual standard Canada & US retailers, may or may not also be discounted in other regions, etc.):
  • Book to Film Sale, featuring books that have been adapted to film like Sophie's Choice, Kramer vs Kramer (both with Meryl Streep in them), Million Dollar Baby, and others NB: the descriptive blogpost dates from May 2014, but apparently ORM just recycle the original one with new content, and they have a dedicated page for the sale here
  • 10 Books to Brighten Your Dark Winter Mood, mostly non-fiction humour (including an LGBT book), but there's some general/literary & genre fiction in there as well. I recommend the classic humorous memoir Cheaper By the Dozen (Wikipedia), about the 12 kids of early 20th century efficiency experts Frank (Wikipedia) & Lillian Gilbreth (Wikipedia). I read this a long time ago from the library when I was a kid and really liked it, so I'm picking it up tonight with the last of my Kobo contest coupons.

I think both sales are supposed to be good through February, so if you miss out on the coupon expiries for this round of the Kobo contest, you should be able to pick up any you want when the next one appears.

Captives Emily Murdoch

Normandy. 1067.
England has been brought to its knees by the invasion of William the Conqueror and his Norman troops.
Lady Catheryn, an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman, is taken against her will to Normandy after the invasion.
She arrives, a prisoner, at the castle of Lord Geffrei, a ruthless invader who hopes to gain a ransom for her.
Her husband Selwyn is dead, slain in the Conquest, and her daughter Annis has been left behind in England at the mercy of the invaders.

Catheryn is treated like an animal, and left in a cell until she begins to despair.
When Queen Matilda, William the Conqueror's wife, sees her plight, she takes pity on her.
Catheryn is sent to the castle of the noble FitzOsberns - but will her new captivity be any better than the cruelty she faced at Geffrei's hands?
She finds her hostess cold and embittered, but when her husband William FitzOsbern returns from the Conquest, Catheryn's heart is torn by unwanted emotions.
She becomes entangled in the quarrels and heartbreaks of her jailers even as she tries to remember her place among them.
Is she falling in love with the man who helped to destroy her homeland?
Can Catheryn betray her Anglo-Saxon roots, and her late husband?
Or will she break free, and find her way back to Annis?

Emily Murdoch is a medieval historian and novelist. She lives in York. She is also the author of Not Free Conquests and Love Letters in the same series.

A Good Soldier by Richard Townsend Bickers

Calcutta, 1824.

The 69th Regiment of the Bengal Army under Hugh Ramsey has just mutinied.
They believe that the boat taking them upriver will take them too far: by crossing the sea, they will lose caste, a sacrilege to their religious sanctity.
Disillusioned by the action of his soldiers and his poor prospect for riches, Ramsey resigns his post to set off in search of his fortune along with two of his Sepoys.

Originally published as `The Sands of Truth'.

Richard Townsend Bickers wrote a range of military fiction and non-fiction books, including `Torpedo Attack', `My Enemy Came Nigh', `Bombing Run', `Fighters Up' and `Summer of No Surrender'.

Was It Just a Dream by Ruth Benjamin, a collection of Jewish-themed literary short stories mostly originally published in magazines named in the blurb.

This is a collection of 18 modern day Jewish Fiction stories published throughout the years. Most of these appeared in either the 'Jewish Homemaker' in New York or the 'Concord Magazine' in London.

Music of the Soul, a mixed-marriage literary drama/thriller originally out from Jerusalem-based Orthodox specialty publisher Targum Press (Wikipedia) in 2000.

They were the wonder couple: Sara, a gifted artist and musician, and her fiancé, Lionel, a professional violinist with an endearing smile and a thoughtful personality. The fact that Sara was a South African Jew, and Lionel a gentile of German extraction, meant little to either of them.

But a chance encounter with a Holocaust survivor and a harrowing trip to Germany to meet Lionel’ family leaves Sara changed forever. And so begins a dramatic, action packed story which takes the reader on a breathtaking adventure through three continents, through secrets of the past and hopes for the future.

All the Hidden Children a Holocaust survivor self-discovery thriller originally out from Targum in 1995.

No one knows why John Carter has a number on his arm, obviously from a German Concentration Camp.He himself was never given a satisfactory answer about a tatoo which seems to have been with him all his life.

His past - a dark mystery.

His present - a confused whirl of emotions and questions.
His future - unknown and full of danger.

This novel, first published by Targum Press in 1995, takes the reader on an action-packed and suspenseful journey across three continents and five decades as Carter attempts to unravel the secret of his past - and build a future as a Jew.

The Selby Printout, a techno-thriller originally out from Targum in 1998.

A few numbers keyed into a computer by trembling hands - and a man's career, his reputation, and his very life are in peril, in a high-stakes game of computer fraud. The prime suspect? Michael Berman, a ba'al teshuvah still grappling with his own questions of where he belongs in the Jewish world.

Someone has broken into a bank's computer network and made off with huge sums of money. All eyes turn accusingly towards Michael, the last employee to have worked on the account. As Michael tries to clear his name, he finds himself entangled in a web of intrigue and danger. So many questions: Whose hand is it, that leaves such tiny traces in the digital world of cyberspace? How can Michael prove that his tampering with the bank's figures was completely innocent? And, most difficult question of all, how can Michael restore the contentment and satisfaction that he'd felt when he'd first become an observant Jew?

To find the answers, Michael and his aging grandfather, an unlikely ally in this high-tech chase, pursue a dangerous course that will lead them from the depths of the earth to South Africa's highest mountains - and onto a journey of self-discovery that will help them reveal their own selves, even as they uncover the hidden enemy.

Benjamin also has a number of other self-pub-looking novels offered if you're interested, including some kids/YA & mystery stories.

Stranger to Her People by Ruth Benjamin, a Jewish convert post-Holocaust self-discovery/identity literary thriller originally out from small publisher CIS in 1993.

Jenny Reynolds, a young South African convert to Judaism, was full of eager anticipation as she set out from Johannesburg on the "March of the Living" tour. Over the next few weeks, as part of an organized groups of thousands of holocaust survivors and their families, she would visit the scenes of the German destruction of European Jewry during the Second World War.

It promised to be a profound intellectual and emotional experience, an experience that would be burned into her memory for the rest of her life. Her pilgrimage to the scenes of the holocaust does indeed become an experience that she would never forget, but in a very unexpected way. During an unscheduled overnight stopover in Switzerland, Jenny is shocked to discover that there may be a dark secret buried in her family's past.

Benjamin also offers a backlist mysterious identity thriller, On a Golden Chain, and some YA mysteries, out from CIS and Hachai, a Jewish specialty imprint, and some self-pub-looking things, if you're interesteed.

Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

Frozen Music: 20th Anniversary Edition by Michael J. Vaughan, a musical literary fiction novel originally out from Northwest Pub in 1995, which in the new edition the blurb says was an award winner at the 2014 San Francisco Book Festival.

The more Michael Moss refuses to watch his conductor, Amy Fine, the more she becomes determined to make him watch. The ensuing battle of wills - and his curious flare for public soakings - threatens to pull Michael out of the deep freeze, and force him to exorcise Stacy Wilkes, the tempestuous alcoholic who turned his heart to stone.
