Giving away free e-books boosts sales, both print and e-. Cf. the Baen Free Library.

And frankly, it's a mercy when some books are just not the sort you should pay for and that trees shouldn't have to die for*.

* I'd say all that L. Ron Hubbard stuff, but that would probably bring the wrath of Xenu down on my head. Thankfully, I have a plush Cthulhu to battle† him should the need arise.
