Before college, I had taken the novel Metropolis and done an illustrated treatment, a 100-page graphic novel version. I look at it today and see mediocre-to-okay graphics, but a lot of horrible text... I was trying to be faithful to the story as written, while giving it an updating for the GN, and the result was not pretty.

I keep meaning to go in, improve the text (and maybe some of the illustrations) and actually release it someday as a digital GN, though I don't know what format I'd do it in...

I have tons of really old stuff. I have an entire folder dedicated to things that will never see the light of day and those were written DURING my actual writing career, not before. I shudder to think...

bonus babies

Heh, I threw a story I wrote as a teenager in as a bonus at the end of my story collection FLOWERS, which featured many of my early published short stories. That story was when I wanted to be Vonnegut crossed with Hemingway and it involved a lot of cigarette smoking...I even billed it as "what happens when a writer doesn't know any better..."

But you know what? I didn't edit it a bit, but already the sentences were sound--I do freelance editing, and the writers that can write a sentence have a chance, because that's the basic building block. After that, it's just a matter of writing a million words.

Scott

Hey, that's not a bad idea.

I love "bonus materials" and used to be a DVD whore for their director's commentary and all that. If I ever decide to put something on Smashwords, I've got half a mind to include some "bonus features."

Original drafts of scenes, extra stories, commentary -- whatever.

And as an aside, I'm jealous of you. I love...love WNC. I'm actually considering a move to the triangle just to be that much closer to the mountains. The world is flat here. Flat and square.
