book won't respond to font changes in my Paperwhite

I have an ebook where the font is just too small. I exploded the epub, and removed all font-size commands, and rebuilt the book, but when I try to change the font size on my Paperwhite, it either doesn't change at all (up to the 5th largest font size) or goes really huge (6th largest font size).

here is the CSS. Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Without a base font (usually in the body class) you get whatever the device defaults to.

BTW have you validated that CSS at W3C? One tiny error and it might be ignored.

There is no body class in the css.

The css validates.

I removed the book from my kindle completely with calibre, rebooted the kindle just because, and reconverted the epub to mobi, and put it back on my kindle - where it reappeared in the collection from which I removed it, making me wonder whether there is some ghost version that stayed on my kindle somehow, because I'm still having that problem with the book.
