Google, the reigning king of Web search, cast a long shadow in the high-technology world last summer when it raised $1.67 billion in an initial public offering and saw its share price quickly double. But for those who missed out on the riches, a small sector of search companies has sprung up on both sides of the country.

Lycos, AltaVista, Dogpile, My Excite, Mamma Metasearch, MSN, Go, Looksmart, AlltheWeb, Search.com, Infospace..........

Many (most) of the companies you've mentioned have existed LONG before Google was around in any public capacity.

Its also important to note that there are a lot of things Google can NOT do that other search engines CAN do (like compounding search queries, something very common, if you use the Internet for real production research). They're good, they're fast, but they're not the best.

I think it was I know they were before google but I couldn't find any after google at the moment.
And Google is the best out of all search engines because it is the most used and it has gmail.

I have to agree with everyone else here: citing the sources is *very* important to avoid confusions.

Anyways, Google is indeed not alone, as this site should tell you with "over 12,500 links to local, regional, national, and foreign internet search engines, web directories, pay per click search engines and meta search engines."

Oh and there is CompletePlanet, claiming to index "over 70,000+ searchable databases and specialty search engines." Enough?
