Understanding the solar system

Does anybody know of any books that details and talks about space and our solar system simply (if possibly!).

I'd love to learn about what's beyond our planet but it seems to just go over my head. For the UK people, I enjoy listening to Brian Cox; is he a good path to go down?

Do you have a "Waterstones" near to you? I'd suggest going there and looking in their Astronomy section. There's a huge range of introductory books available, and this is a subject where paper books with nice pictures have the edge over ebooks.

I've been recommended A Short History... by Bill Bryson before...

It's a wonderful book, which I'd thoroughly recommend reading, but it won't help in the slightest with your goal to understand the solar system.

Isaac Asimov wrote a good many non-fiction books some of which deal with the planets.

Have you been to your local library? If the books in the adult selection seems too hard, try the childrens selection. Childrens fact books are often good at explaining the basics.

Check if your local library has the "Modern Scholar" recorded lectures on CD. There are two really good ones covering the local solar system and then stars and galaxies:

Astronomy: Earth, Sky and Planets
Astronomy: Stars, Galaxies, and the Universe

Both of the above are by Professor James B. Kaler of the University of Illinois. Because they are actual recorded lectures, they are presented as teacher-to-student and follow a nice progression.

No one has recommended Neil DeGrasse Tyson? I have never read any of his books, I only know I love listening to him speak. Anybody read any of his books?
